The Assessment Process in Relation to Individuals and Families In general an assessment is the process of defining a problem that is present, what could be causing the problem, and what options are there to resolve the problem (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Both individual and family assessments start when the social worker meets them and according to Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2018) social workers start piecing together the puzzle that is assessment. An assessment starts with identifying the client (whether individual or whole family unit), and figuring out the client-in-situation from an environmental perspective (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Next, gather information about the problems and needs of the client and lastly, identify the strengths of the client (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Types of Information that are Important According to Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2018) an assessment should accomplish goals like a clear understanding of the problems, the needs of the client(s), the general environmental surroundings, the situations surrounding client(s), and strengths and limitations of the client(s). This could include demographics, economical, and situational circumstances like substance use, homelessness, employment, and even community resources they have an understanding or use of. Compare Macro and Micro–Level Assessments Micro assessments work with individuals, their environment, and situations. The assessment will be focused on improving an individuals perspective and experiences by gathering information pertinent to creating an individualized plan (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Macro level assessments involve collective experiences of an entire group within a specific situation or issue that could affect multiple people all at once (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Each involves the other to some extent as within an assessment of micro-level looking into environmental circumstance, community resources available, economic standings and employability, all require a wider range of view than simply a single client. Likewise, macro-level assessment will need feedback from individuals and certain circumstances in order to have a complete picture in order to enter the planning phase. Macro-level Information Gathering
Identifying key stakeholders to discuss problems or issues within the practice or community is a great way to gather initial information for macro-assessment (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Completing research prior to the assessment phase as far as economics, demographics, history, availability of resources, transportation scores for area, etc., would be extremely helpful in narrowing down the information that has already been gathered previously so you are not walking over your self or wasting time. Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018) also state that some information for comparative data would have to be researched in similar but not local communities. Reluctant to be Assessed – Micro Level I have seen in personal work that some guardians are apprehensive of assessments for family or individuals as they think of them as a test, pass or fail. When you are asking personal questions with a plan to figure out what makes each person tick and can offer solutions then persons would have to admit there was a problem and some fear how bad that problem may be or how far it effects their daily functioning. We have parenting assessments, child and adult treatment assessments, a Universal Assessment, suicide severity assessment, CANS, ANDS, and multiple other assessments. Most of the resistance comes from individuals that have been court ordered to comply with treatment or education programs. References Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2018).
