Provide a brief description of the family system you selected. The family I selected was a family with substance abuse. The family includes a married couple including a father with the substance abuse issue (alcohol), the mother, and their two children, Stephanie, age 15 and Steven, 17. Explain potential barriers or challenges this family might encounter Life already provides enough barriers in “normal” families, but substance abuse can drastically increase the challenges within a family. They may face food insecurity if alcoholism affects the father’s ability to hold a job. The father may be abusive towards either the wife or children when drinking. The mother may have to work extra hours to make up for the father’s lack of a job, which could put a strain on their marriage. The children could struggle in school due to the stress within their home life. Substance abuse affects more than just the father; it bleeds into everyone else within the family. This family needs the help of a social worker, but whether they admit the need or whether they can afford the help is to be determined. The attachment theory involves relationships between people beginning with the bond of the child and mother and shapes how their relationships progress throughout their adult relationships (Coffman, 2021). Children with alcoholism in the family may struggle with relationships later in life or even abuse alcohol to cope themselves later in life. If Stephanie and Steven don’t receive the counseling they need, they could struggle with relationships or even worse, turn to alcohol to cope with their issues.
Explain how a social worker might address this barrier on an individual, family, organizational, group, or community level . Following the Generalist Intervention Model, “A social worker must engage a family, conduct an assessment, develop a plan, implement the plan while amending it as necessary, evaluate progress, terminate involvement with the family, and, finally, provide follow-up regarding subsequent status” (Kirst, 2018). Conducting the assessment, the worker may address the issue of alcoholism with the father and recommend a treatment plan, such as attending AA meetings. They may also determine the issue of food insecurity and recommend resources, such as local programs or food banks to help. They may also recommend counseling for the family as a whole or individually. Essentially, the social worker should work with the family to identify a plan for treatment of each family member and the goals for treatment of each member of the family (Samudio, 2015). The social worker and the family must work together to form a plan to help the family move forward positively. References: Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2018).
