How To Calculate Your Grade Course Grading Table: Calculating Your Grade: To calculate your grade at any point during the semester, take the total points that you have earned from all assessments and divide that by the total points possible at the point in the semester: (Exam score(s) + TH + SB + VL) ÷ Course Total* * Course Total is at the time of grade calculation. Post-Unit 1 Exam Overall Course Grade Example: This example shows how to calculate your grade after the Unit 1 Exam. We will first calculate Top Hat points as the points earned for Q, P, and A need to be normalized to the 20, 20, and 10 point totals, respectively, allotted for these categories. We will then add Connect (SmartBook and Virtual Lab) points. Top Hat (TH) 1) TH is broken down into points earned from quizzes (Q), participation (P), and attendance (A). 2) Your cumulative TH points at the end of the semester are worth 12.5% of your overall course grade (50/400). 3) Your points/percentages for Q, P, and A are provided on your TH application. You can set up how you view your TH grades, as points or percentages – I recommend percentages. rather than the mobile app, when calculating your grade. Below is an example of how Q, P, and A points will appear to you in the TH gradebook. A points are provided as total present/total asked. For this example, A was taken 4 times, and the student was present on 3 of the 4 occasions. The student earned 13/13 P points. “Correctness” is in reference to Q points, as quiz questions are assigned for correctness, unlike participation questions. For this example, the student got 42.75 points out of a total of 69.5. “Total Grades” is your total sum of points for P and Q. Again, you can change the output so that the Q and P, but not A (this will stay as points), are represented as percentages. So, for this example, you could see Attendance as 3/4 (or 75%), Participation as 100%, and Correctness (which is quiz points) as 61.5%. The “Total Grades” percentage would be 67.5%. I recommend using the percentage view. I will explain why shortly. You can ignore “Total Grades” as this combined value is not useful for how TH grades are calculated in this course. 4) Importantly, I also provide you with your running point totals for Q, P, and A on Canvas. I update these points after every examination. It is useful to have point totals in Canvas so you can track your points as you earn them. However, once again, what you really need are the percentages. You can quickly generate your Q, P , and A percentage points from these numbers, and these percentages should match those in your TH application. These points/percentages, however, are not “normalized” to my grading scale above. 5) Recall that TH is worth a total of 50 out of 350 points. Q accounts for 20/50 (40% of TH), P accounts for 20/50 (40% of TH), and A accounts for 10/50 (20% of TH). 6) So, let’s say that after the Unit 1 Exam you have 61.5% Q, 100% P, and 75% A, as in the example above. In terms of points, this is 42.75/69.5 Q, 13/13 P, and 3/4 A. The first thing to note is that while Q is only worth a total of 20 points for entire semester, 69.5 points have already been offered at this point. The reality is that I will offer many more points than the 20 points allotted for Q, the 20 points allotted for P, and the 10 points allotted for A during the semester. 7) So, how do you normalize your points from TH? This is where you want to stick with the percentages that TH provides and not the points (you also want to calculate the percentages from the TH points I post on Canvas and make sure they are in agreement). For Q, you have 61.5%. That comes from 42.75 points correct out of 69.5 points. However, the points are not what you need here. You need the percentage correct. Since Q is worth a total of 20 points, you want to know how much of that 20 you have at this point. So, you just take 61.5% of 20, which is 12.3/20. For P, you take 100% of 20, which is 20/20. And finally, you take 75% of 10 for A, which is 7.5/10. This is precisely what I will do at the end of the semester when all of the TH Q, P, and A points are in. That is, I will normalize your TH grades. Post-Unit 1 Exam TH Points: Q = 12.3/20; P = 20/20; A = 7.5/10 (or 39.8/50 ). Smart Book (SB)

1) Each SB assignment is worth 3.85 points. To get the total SB points possible at any particular time in the semester, multiply 3.85 by the number of topics completed (in this case, 3, which equals to 11.55). Let’s say you missed on SB assignment for Unit 1. So, you have 2 x 3.85 = 7.7 points for SB. Virtual Lab (VL) 1) There are 2 points possible to be earned for VL assignments by the end of Unit 1 (i.e., 2 points of Extra Credit). See the table below for a mid-semester overall course grade example: Post-Unit 1 Exam Grade Calculation: Let’s calculate your Post-Unit 1 Exam Grade considering you earned, for example, 50/60 on the Unit 1 Exam: Current Grade: (97.28 + 2)/111.55 = 89% (or 3.5) . End of Semester Grade Calculation: Let’s calculate your end of semester grade considering the following earned points for the semester, for example: Assessments Points Received Points Possible Unit 1 Exam 50 /60 Unit 2 Exam 40 /60 Unit 3 Exam 60 /60 Unit 4 Exam 55 /60 Unit 5 Exam 50 /60 Top Hat (TH) 40 /50 SmartBook (SB) 45 /50 Course Total 340 /400 Virtual Lab (VL) 10 /10 Final Grade: (340 + 10)/400 = 87.5% (or 3.5) .
