1 Project Three Shawna Soard Southern New Hampshire University CJ 315: Victimology Professor David Conn December 17, 2023
2 Project Three In the Merriam-Webster dictionary empathy is described as “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.” (Merriam Webster, 2009). To put it plainly it is simply making a connection with another person or putting yourself in their shoes. Empathy is important in every division of the criminal justice system. From first responders, all the way through their court appearance and if applicable Correction Officers and probation/parole officers. By first responders putting themselves into the shoes of the victims they can let them know they care about what they are going through. It is described in the Police Chief magazine as “understanding why many people behave as they do, which is a central tenet of being trauma informed” (Haas et. al., 2022). So not only do the responding law enforcement officers need to have empathy for the victim but they also need to think about the suspect and what caused them to do what they did. They use this trauma informed care to develop age-appropriate responses to reduce trauma on the scene of the crime, reduce race-based trauma in the community, and prioritize resources to address secondary trauma that the law enforcement officers themselves face (Haas et al., 2022). VICTIM: Officer Grumpy was the only officer to respond to Victor (the victim). He showed no empathy, only gave Victor the form to fill out. He then filled out his own paperwork with the facts and informed Victor if the “kid” was apprehended the county attorney would let him know (SNHU, n.d.). By not giving Victor compassion or reassurance on the scene it made Victor fearful and anxious to continue doing his job since he felt like the crime was not taken seriously the officer was just there to do the minimum required of him. Since the robbery was committed
3 by a teenager it made Victor scared to pick up any teenagers in his cab which is his livelihood. So, he lost money by being careful who he picked up for a ride. Since the crime Victor did find his own therapist and is currently looking for a new job (SNHU, n.d.). If Officer Grumpy had done his job correctly and showed some compassion for Victor and that he was taking this crime seriously and told Victor about some resources in the community (like a few names of therapists) that work with victims of crime, then Victor could have worked through his feelings sooner and been able to go back to work. Also, with him being a victim of a violent crime he should be receiving monetary support to help aid in his financial difficulty while working through his feeling of mistrust of teenage boys. This is all things that should have been started by Officer Grumpy. OFFENDER: Officer Friendly apprehended James (the offender) and from the beginning treated him with empathy. He was patient and listened to James explain his side of the story. Since Officer Friendly has a son around the same age as James and knew that James does not have any male role model along with no prior criminal history he knew there was more to the story so he talked to James and found out this group of boys had dared him to rob the cab driver under duress that if he didn’t hold up the cab driver then the boys would rob his mom (SNHU, n.d.). Due to Officer Friendly’s empathy and caring James was given a chance to participate in our new program being offered to juveniles called the Restorative Justice Program for Youthful Offenders (SNHU, n.d.).
