Report
Data Analysis Assignment #1 UGPH GU 20 002 Dr. Hai Shu Total: 5 points The data set (Data1.csv) represents a survey administered to 261 young adults. The goal of this cross-sectional survey was to characterize substance use and correlates of substance use in the population of young adults. Your task is to identify the demographic and mental health factors that relate to substance use. The data is obtained from the article Halkitis et al 2010 but with extra information. During the course of the class, you will be analyzing these data, and presenting your findings. The final report of the project will consist of 5 sections: Analytic Plan (Overview) Sample Characteristics Descriptives of Drug Use and Mental Health Bivariable Analysis Multivariable Analysis. But you are now at the first phase and required to write a report to answer the questions in the assignment. Please write up the questions below in the format you’d see in a research paper (e.g., Halkitis et al 2010). Also submit the code you used for any results and figures. You must submit both the report file (.docx or .doc is preferred) and the R code file (in .R format). The variable TOTAL DRUGS in the data denotes the number of drugs used in lifetime. ILLEGAL DRUGS and ILLEGAL DRUGS are two composite drug use variables. Please ignore the detailed definitions of ILLEGAL DRUGS and ILLEGALDRUGS2. Assignment 1: Sample Characteristics and Descriptive analyses Using descriptive statistics, analyze and report the demographic characteristics of the sample. Your report should include the 7 demographic variables. (1 point) The demographic characteristics of the sample include 18-25 year olds, heterosexually identified adults. Survey results were conducted via brief street intercept interviews in New York City between August and October 2006. Places of recruitment included various locations frequented by New York City young adults such as public parks, public shopping or restaurant areas, outside entrances to subway or bus stops. In total, demographic information of age, gender, racial/ ethnic identification, sexual orientation, education attainment, current school enrollment status, and
employment status was measured. 60.2% of the sample were female, 39.8% were male, the average age was 21.44 years old, with a standard deviation age of 2.22, median age of 20, range of ages in the sample is 7 because ages range from 18 to 25, the median race/ethnicity is white/caucasian with 62.3%, 15% of the sample identified as API, 8.8% of mixed ethnicity, 6.2% Latino, 4.2% african american, and 3.5% of other race/ ethnicity. The average status of university/college enrollment is currently enrolled full time, and the mode of employment status is unemployed. The participants in school were slightly younger than those not enrolled with a mean of 20.88 and standard deviation of 2.04 versus a mean of 22.92 and standard deviation of 2.03 of those not enrolled in school. Analyze the drug use and mental health variables and report summary statistics for these. Your report should include the 16 drug-use variables and the 3 mental health variables. (1 point) The drug use variables in this study include ecstasy, ketamine, methamphetamine, marijuana, powder cocaine, GHB, crack cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and LSD. The average number of lifetime drugs was 1.38 with a median of 1 and standard deviation of 1.73, minimum of 0 and maximum of 10. The most frequently reported drugs were marijuana with 61.7%, hallucinogens with 18.4%, powder cocaine with 18%, and ecstasy with 18.1%. With regard for gender, males were more likely to use it than women in all cases regardless of substance. There were no significant differences in lifetime use by race, except for marijuana with 71% of caucasians, 63.6 % of African Americans, 56.3% of Latinos, and 26.3% of asian pacific islanders reporting lifetime use of marijuana. There were significant differences in lifetime use with regards to hallucinogens and enrollment in college or university with significantly more users being unenrolled. The mental health variables include depression, anxiety, and loneliness Include up to 2 tables or figures (at least 1 table or 1 figure) in this assignment. You have to choose which analyses would be suitable to present in this manner. (0.5 point) Gender and total drug usage for marijuana Include all of your R code in your submitted R code file (in .R format) . Please use comments on the code to tell us what you did for each part.
