2 1. Describe and evaluate the norm group. The norm group for this BDI-II was split into two groups whose participants were between the ages of 13 and 86 and were looking for therapy at clinics on the East Coast. Most group participants were females at 63% and males at 37%. 91% of the group participants were white, 4% of participants were African American, 4% were Asian American, and 1% were Hispanic. Participants were split into two groups. These two groups were based on the location of the participants, either urban or suburban. a. Do you think it is representative? Yes, the norm group is representative. The norm group has an age range of 13-86, with an average age of 37.2. I am a mental health counselor who works with adult clients at an outpatient counseling clinic, and I am considering using the BDI-II. The norm group’s average age represents the age of my clients to whom this assessment is intended. b. Do you think the norm group is current? The BDI-II was created in 1996 and only represents 1% of the Hispanic population. According to Sheperis et al., (2020), in the United States minority populations have increased in the last few decades and Hispanics now make up 17% of the U.S. population. Due to this increase in population caution should be used when using this assessment on the Hispanic population to provide correct results. c. Do you believe the size of the norm group was large enough? Yes, the norm group is large enough with 500 individuals. As a mental health counselor at the outpatient counseling clinic, I see about 20 clients a week. My client list is small. Therefore, the instrument I use is assessment needs to be small to be more accurate. The BDI-II is large enough for what I intend to use it for in my practice.
3 d. Are the samples related to the population you intend to use the test with? Yes, the samples are related to the population I intend to use for the test. My clients are outpatient therapy clients. Likewise, the norm group consists of individuals looking for outpatient therapy. Therefore, the samples and the population correlate and make the BDI-II appropriate for this intended purpose. 2. Describe the practical aspects of the instrument, focusing on issues related to time required for administration, ease of administration, and ease of scoring. The practical aspects of the BDI-II are that this assessment is self-reported and contains 21 items. This assessment requires 5 to 10 minutes to administer to clients and is easy to administer to clients in different environments. Likewise, this assessment is easy and quickly scored for clients. Therefore, clients will know right away if there are signs of depression detected . 3. Summarize the strengths and weakness of the inventory. The strengths of this assessment would be how easy it is to give it to clients and how little time it takes to administer it. Five to ten minutes is a short time for a client to complete an assessment and determine the results. Clients may likely take a less complicated assessment than an extended test that takes time to complete and determine the results. Also, this assessment allows for the measuring of how severe a client’s depression may be. On the other hand, there are weaknesses of the BDI-II. According to Wang & Gorenstein (2021), participants in the BDI-II can manipulate the scores, and where the BDI-II is administered to participants, for example, in front of other people are weaknesses. These weaknesses can affect the results of the BDI-II. Also, the BDI-II can be used quickly by mental
