Worksheet 01 1.) An airline analyst wishes to estimate the proportion of all American adults who are afraid to fly because of potential terrorist attacks. To estimate this percentage, the analyst decides to survey 1500 Americans from across the nation. 176 stated that they were afraid to fly. Identify the relevant sample and population in this situation. Is this an example of descriptive or inferential statistics? Explain your answer. The sample is the 1500 Americans surveyed. The population is all American adults The 176/1500 is an example of descriptive statistics because it came from the sample and was describing the sample s characteristics. If he then went on and made a judgement about the population based on this sample, that judgement would be inferential statistics. 2.) The number of children living in each of a large number of randomly selected households is an example of which data type? Be specific and explain your choice. The data is numerical and therefore quantitative. Also, it comes in whole numbers only. This makes it discrete. 3.) Give an example of data that could be considered nominal. Answer will vary. Must be categorical with no ordering 4.) The classrooms on the first floor of Clark Hall are numbered 100 to 117. The classroom numbers would be considered what type of data? Be as descriptive as possible. Qualitative or Categorical because the numbers are placeholders for the room name. We could have just as easily called them by types of flowers Rose room, Lily Room, etc. No meaningful arithmetic could be performed on these numbers. These are nominal (even though numbers have a natural ordering) because the numbers are just placeholders. If we replaced the numbers with flower names, then it s clear that there is not a natural ordering to the labels for classrooms. (Will accept ordinal with reason there is a natural ordering to how the numbers are assigned to the rooms around the floor.)
5.) Car buyers at a local dealer were surveyed about their recent purchase. Survey questions included information about car make, car model, number of cylinders, miles per gallon (mpg) highway, satisfaction with the purchase process (code 1-5 with 1 = totally dissatisfied and 5 = totally satisfied), reason for choosing this dealer, as well as gender, age, and ZIP code of the buyer. Determine if each of the answers to the nine questions would result in categorical or numerical data. Give reasons for each of your choices. Make, model, gender, and reason are categorical because they result in word answers that designate a particular category. ZIP code is categorical, as numerical processes (like adding or averaging) make no sense. Satisfaction rating is also categorical because the number is merely a code for a category. Number of cylinders, miles per gallon, and age are numerical, as they each result in a numerical value for which adding or averaging make sense.
