Intermediate Statistics Lab Exam 1 Instructions: 1. Download the two exam data sets (‘gradgre.sav’ and ‘smoker.sav’). 2. Complete the exam entirely in the SPSS output viewer. 3. Once completed, save the SPSS output file (.spv) or export the SPSS output (.pdf). Title the output, “Exam1output”. 4. Check your output to make sure that all of your answers are there. 5. Upload 1) each of the exam datasets (‘gradegre.sav’ and ‘smoker.sav’) and 2) your output file titled “Exam1ouptut” to the Exam 1 submission portal under “Assignments” in Canvas. Use the data set “ gradgre.sav ” on Canvas to answer the first three questions. It has been collected from a group of graduate students, and includes their GPA, their performance on the GRE, and faculty ratings given to them over two semesters (fr1, fr2). (1) Using the compute procedure, create a new variable representing the MEAN of variables fr1 and f2. Call the new variable avgfr (for average faculty rating). Create a histogram for the variable. (5 pts.) (2) Examine whether the variable Total GRE (GREtotal) has any outlier scores. If so, report the a) Case number and b) GRE score. If you found no outliers, say so. (5 pts.) (3a) Now, select cases of participants whose GPA is greater than 3.00. (5 pts.) (3b) After you have selected cases of GPA greater than 3.00, find the descriptive statistics for the variable GPA. Include the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance, minimum, and maximum. (6 pts.) ~~~ Insert text into your SPSS output to answer the following two questions: (4) A researcher measures hours of sleep as a variable in her study. Is hours of sleep a nominal, ordinal, or scale variable measure? (5 pts.) (5) A sample of 22 fifth grade students has a grade point average of 3.0 in math. We know that the grade point average of all fifth grade students over the last five years is 2.75. We are interested in whether the grade point average of the 22 students is significantly different from the 2.75 GPA.

What statistical test should be used to answer this research question? (5 pts.) ~~~ Use the data set smoker.sav to answer the final two questions. A researcher is interested in whether regularly smoking marijuana would affect digit-span recall, which is a measure of short-term memory. The researcher first found two groups of participants (‘smoke_group’): (1) nonsmokers and (2) smokers. Each group was given a digit-span test, and the number of digits recalled is listed in the ‘digit_span’ column in the Data View. A higher digit-span score implies a better short-term memory. (6a) Perform a statistical test to evaluate whether smoking marijuana affects digit- span recall. (6 pts.) (6b) Report results in APA format, including the type of the test used, whether results were significant (with df, t- and p- values), the means and standard deviations for each group, and what you can conclude from the results.
