STA 144 HOMEWORK 4 Chapter 7 1. Thinking of your area of interest, do the following: a. Create a null hypothesis (hypothesis of no effect)? b. Create a research hypothesis (hypothesis of effect)? a) Basketball athletes and football athletes have no difference in their agility. b) Basketball athletes have more agility than football athletes. 2. Why does the scientific method work? The scientific method works by starting out with an educated guess. With the educated guess, or hypothesis, scientists conduct research that tests the said hypothesis with hopes to minimize errors and maximize realizability / validity. In order to minimize error, the selected sample should echo characteristics from larger populations. The scientific method works because it allows scientists to evaluate error that might be present in a specific research and either prove or disprove their hypothesis. Also, the scientific method has good thumb of rules that all should follow in order to ensure that research conducted is as unbiased as possible. 3. Why do good samples make for good tests of research hypotheses? What is the danger in not selecting a representative sample? A good sample is a a sample that closely resembles a population, it helps the research by providing an accurate representation of the population yet saves total complexity of the research. The danger of a sample that is not representative is that you will have results that do not reflect reality or the real population, and the research will have more error. 4. For the following research questions, create one null hypothesis, one directional research hypothesis, and one nondirectional research hypothesis for each statement. a. What are the effects of attention span on out-of-seat classroom behavior? b. What is the relationship between the quality of a marriage and the quality of the spouses’ relationships with their siblings? c. What is the best way to treat an eating disorder? a) Students in classroom and students on out seat have no difference in their attention span. Students in classroom and students on out seat have different attention spans. Students out of seat have longer attention span than students in classroom.
