There are many policies and procedures within the UK that outline the current legislation and guidelines to help with safeguarding children and young people. The Children Act 1989 The integral part of this act is to maintain the child is at the forefront of decisions; the best option in relation to the child’s welfare will be taken into account when deciding the best course of action for the child/young person’s upbringing – creating a partnership between parents and multi-agencies. If any one of these targets were not being met, today, some agencies could potentially review a child’s safety under this current legislation. A second part of this new legislation was the encouragement of multi-agencies to work together – this idea came as a direct consequence of the failings in relation to Victoria Climbie. With this, a database accessible by all authorities involved with children and young people was set up so that records can be maintained effectively and information can be shared easily. Finally, based on the initiative of agencies working together to support children and young people, Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCB’s) were created within LEA’s. In my setting, each planning sheet that teachers use has the five points from ECM written on it, as a constant reminder to include each child in the lesson and differentiate accordingly in order to reach all abilities. The five points of ECM are also on display boards/walls in most classrooms. In class, we were put into groups and had to present an act to the rest of the class and state how it works in school today. Me and Anne presented the childrens act 1989 which is shown on the next page. Following that is the other groups presentation handouts on the different acts.
