Stephen King’s action thriller 11.23.63 has the main character, Jake Epping, traveling back in time through a portal in Al’s Diner. His main goal throughout the novel is to research the past and stop JFK from being killed that fateful afternoon in Dallas Texas. King chooses many literary devices that make this story come alive and fun and easy to read.
One of the first literary devices that is easily noticeable is suspense this is it what keeps the reader wanting more. When Al said “You can change history, Jake. Do you understand that? John Kennedy can live.” (King 111). Jake replies with huge doubts, “What if it went wrong?” ……. “What if I managed,……., to stop it from happening and made things worse instead of better? What if I came back

When King describes Al in the story it is very easy for the reader to picture exactly what he looks like and how sick he is. “It wasn’t just his normally ruddy cheeks had gone slack and sallow…..the rheum that coated his blue eyes which now looked washed out and nearsightedly peering. ……his hair, formally almost all black and now almost all white.” (44). This paints a very sick and dying man. King goes on to describe Al a little more, “And he begun to cough, thick chaining sounds that came from deep inside him.” (57). It is easy to gather from this imagery that Al is most likely dying of lung …show more content…
“Son, have you listened to a single word I’ve said?”....”Yessir!” …..”Well, gol-lee”!” (170). This helps the reader hear and see the era of the story. Dialect is also used when some lower class people speak, “I’m gone come out n beat you snotty!......Wha’ choo want? If it’s a bill, I cain’t hep you……..He got work today.” (181). With the way, this is written the reader can picture what type of area this is and what kind of social status this person has that is speaking. Also with some of the people Jake first meets when he travels back have strong Maine accents. “That roads a bugger….it came out buggah.” (34) This lends to authenticity of these characters and to the entire
Suspense is defined as the author withholding information or when the unexpected happens, leaving you guessing and wanting more. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, he has inserted much suspense in this short (long) story, for the reason that it makes the reader want to know more and having to mindset of excitement or surprise. Another reason he added many suspense is so that it wouldn’t be so blunt, it wouldn’t just tell us what happened it would give us details and how he got or how he did that and more.
Have you ever read a book that continued to keep you interested in what's going to happen next? You get lost in the book trying to figure out what's going to happen before reading on. This happens often in novels that have a lot of suspense like Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” or Tobias Wolff’s “Hunters In The Snow.” The fact that they both have suspense is often the only similarity people can think of. There are many similarities and differences in them both that get ignored such as similarities and differences in the plot, theme, and characters.
Elements introduce literary elements which include symbols and aspects used by Kathryn Stockett the author. Literary elements are broken down into the plot, the character, the theme, and mood which are all emprinted elements created by the author.
There are many ways authors include literary devices to not only express their position on certain things, but also to evoke emotion and thought from readers for them to fully understand the reason for them being presented. The author may drop hints through tone, style, symbolism, and motifs. These four elements help lead the reader to infer reasoning, meaning, and significance behind aspects of every story.
One example is when Sergeant Major Morris is chatting with the Whites, Morris says “If you keep it, don’t blame me for what happens” (Jacobs, 91). This is suspenseful and foreshadowing seeing something bad will happen and a reader does not quite know what. Herbert says after Mr. White makes the wish, “Well I don’t see the money...and I bet I never shall” (Jacobs, 134). This is foreshadowing Herbert’s death. This is suspenseful seeing Herbert says this as a joke, but later in the story when Herbert dies it seems more sinister. Lastly when Morris is telling the Whites about the paw he says the first person who had the paw on their third wish wished for death. This is foreshadowing and suspense seeing how whatever the first person’s two wishes were they had to very consequential if his last wish was for death. These examples state how suspense is created through
In this essay the writer allows the reader to be witness of the gruesome fight that Paret was subject to. The writer gives off various effects to the reader throughout the essay using rhetorical devices. The rhetorical devices the writer uses to convey these effects are diction, syntax, imagery, and tone.
In John Irving's novel titled, A Prayer for Owen Meany, suspenseful events are of abundance, and there are multiple ways the author creates this suspense. Among these methods of creating suspense, four that stand out are the use of setting, the pace of the story, the involvement of mysteries to be solved, and the ability of the reader to easily identify and sympathize with the protagonist. By placing a character in a gloomy or solitary place, uncomfortable feelings are created, which append to the suspense. Pace and structure of the story also play into the foundation of suspense, as shorter sentences and stronger, more cutting verbs and adjectives are often used to
Throughout the story “Eleven”, Cisneros demonstrates to the reader that Rachel despises her eleventh birthday. In doing so, Cisneros uses rhetorical devices such as tone, simile, dialogue, and repetition. These rhetorical devices serve to further insinuate how Rachel feels about her eleventh birthday. For instance, Rachel uses simile to compare her conflicted emotions to the rattling of pennies in a tin Band-Aid box. Furthermore, Cisneros displays tone and repetition within the story in order to depict Rachel’s attitude. The overall use of rhetorical devices within the story aid the reader in comprehending Cisneros’s characterization of Rachel’s feelings.
Growing up is a process that every kid have to go through. Most kids who grow up notice the changes, and it can either improve or disrupt the person they are. Some kids don’t notice a change at all, and they still feel like the same person from the previous age. In “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros, the author use similes, diction, and imagery to express the emotions and the struggle that Rachel is going through as she turns eleven.
“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson There are two stories that are used in the 1940s unit: “The Lottery” and “One Friday Morning”. Though “One Friday Morning” by Langston Hughes has great symbolism, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is the best short story to keep in the 1940s unit, because there is a lot of imagery, the mood is very clear, and the suspense hooks the reader. The first reason why “The Lottery” is the best short story to keep in the 1940s unit is because it has a very clear mood. In particular, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson has a very clear mood, because of this passage, “By now, all through the crowd there were men holding the small folded papers in their large hand, turning them over and over nervously,” (pg. 4).
“Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer, Sir,’ said I, ‘or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping ,And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door, That I scarce was sure I heard you’— here I opened wide the door; — Darkness there, and nothing more”(Poe). This is a line from one of Edgar Allan Poe’s Short Stories, what makes his and other author’s stories so intriguing and exciting is all the suspense that the author builds up for the reader. Authors do this by using literary techniques including tone, and mood. When the author sets a tone or mood of mysterious or intense feeling for the reader, it creates a urge for the reader to want to keep reading
The Rule of Three is novel that describes a dystopian world where most modern technology ceased to function. The plot was well-written, believable, and provided suspense, especially near the end of the novel. In addition, the author created realistic characters that behaved in rational ways, and conflicts that could be possible in real life. While the elegant word choice along with the use of literary devices enhanced the story and reading experience. I think the best character in the novel was Herb.
The first literary device that I found is an hyperbole. "You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights." It means that you will exceed in life and accomplish a lot of things. They are not actually soaring to high heights, unless they become a pilot or something, because it is just an exaggeration. The second literary device is a metaphor. "You can steer yourself any direction you choose." It means that you can make any choice that you want in your life, and it is a metaphor because you are not actually steering anything. The third literary device is another metaphor. "You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed." This means that nothing can slow you down in your life and you will excel. The fourth literary device is a metaphor
Many authors use different types of literary devices in order to communicate with their audience to portray their perspectives on real world problems or messages through the novel. Messages found in children’s books could be as simple as being kind to one another. The messages or the author’s perspectives found in adult novels could have more meaning to it. These messages could be about real world problems that exist today or in the past. Some authors could have strong opinions about these real life problems and express their opinions through their novels. For example, a real world problem that is often portrayed in novels is the roles of gender and their independence. According to the online dictionary, gender roles can be defined as, “the public image of being male or female that a person presents to others”. Independence can be defined as, “freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others”. In the early 1900s down in the South, gender roles and their independence was very prominent. Women who were white started to gain more independence, and their low paying jobs gave them a little more freedom. They started to develop their own identity instead of being identified by their husbands. While women who were African Americans did not get the same independence that white women got. They were still being identified based on their husbands, and they still had do all the responsibilities of a mother and will do the same things as men, like working on the
Literature is important just as important in today’s society as it was in past societies. An entire culture exists within the written words that are placed on paper by poets writers and novelist. Literature is used to inspire, waken, or transform one’s ideas or thoughts and can take you on a imaginary journey. Literary study involves the four processes of reading, thinking, discussing, and writing. Studying literature can increase one’s knowledge, actively and intellectually challenging the way someone looks at the world. Literature increases a readers awareness of cultural values, history, sociology, psychology, and almost every branch of human knowledge. Literary devices are used to promote the reader’s imagination. Literature devices are used by the writer to set a tone or theme to their stories. From the very beginning of time humans beings have been sharing stories and literary devices have played a key role in our history. Story telling has evolved and the use of literary elements and literary techniques have played a large role in how a writer develop their poems or stories.
