Situated predominantly in urban areas, gangs are becoming a major problem in today's society. The youth and adults are turning into gang members often times to leave behind the current situation they are living now. Many people who aren't familiar or affiliated with gang members are known to be curious as to why it is that the youth and adults join a gang. Some answers might be the current situation, obtaining social status, sense of protection, amongst other personal reasons. Everyone who joins a gang has different situations about why they decide to associate with gang members. In the novel, G-Dog and the Homeboys by Celeste Fremon, focuses on the gang members about East Los Angeles. This book draws the attention on the youth residing within the East Los Angeles territory and a look at the East Los Angeles gang members and how they play a major role in the book as one of the Latino gangs in East Los Angeles.
The Writer of “When life imitates Video”, John Leo has tried to persuade his readers the reason why violent video games have negative impact on children's character. The first main goal of his article is to show the relationship between playing murderous games and violent actions. His second main goal is to make emotional appeal to parents the need to monitor their child from exposure of graphic violent medias. Most of his argument comes from his personal believe otherwise not supported by any evidence except making emotional(pathos) and logical(logos) appeal by trying to associate violence occurred in the Colorado with violent video games. To further strengthen his argument, he cited the Los-Angles Times which describe the characters children display while watching morbid video games and he tried to link the aggressive behavior modeled in the game and violent character. He assume the whole society as his audience. As he stated it, “we are now a society in which the form of play for millions of youngsters is making a large number of people die”.He succeeded in writing and informative and an emotionally appealing article with a potential of convincing his audience against violent video games.

Determined to help his audience - people who stereotype against and do not understand gang life - find commonalities with gang members, Fr. Boyle shares his experiences with gangs in Los Angeles. At the beginning of the novel, Fr. Boyle articulates his thesis and expresses his purpose for sharing his experiences when he states, “Though this book does not concern itself with solving the gang problem, it does aspire to broaden the parameters of our kinship. It hopes not only to put a human face on the gang member, but to recognize our own wounds in the broken
This movie is a great example of social groups, leadership, culture, norms, society, nature and nurture, and social lives. This movie represents how the American culture chooses our social class in society. Some sociologists believed that lifestyle choices are an important influence on our social class position (Giddens, 209). Our class position is the way we dress, where we eat, where we sleep, and how we relax (Giddens,
The movie Boyz N the Hood is an illustration of how a group of early adolescents’ lives was affected negatively due to the environment they lived in. These adolescents lived in an environment where drugs, gangs, and shootings were the center of their community. Living in a predominantly African American community these adolescents were faced with many misfortunes. Ricky one of the adolescent characters I have decided to evaluate for this particular paper was faced with adversity.
These films all reinforced how children’s opinions sway through the way in which they are raised. It demonstrated how as children they were clueless as to who was their enemies and why they were. They also revealed how the government has played a significant role within the riots between the cultural diversity.
In the article, “Violent Media Is Good for Kids”, the author, Gerard Jones, begins by providing background information about himself. As a child, Jones was taught that violence was wrong, and as he grew up, he learned that violent comics and stories aided him to become an action movies and comic book writer. In his article, the author addresses why violent media are good for children. Jones purpose is to inform readers about the positive use of violent media on children. Violence has become extremely prevalent in the media and continues to be a controversial issue. In today’s society, anything marginal is likely to receive a negative connotation before it receives an optimistic one. There have been multiple studies on the negative effects that violence can have on children, but Gerard Jones takes us on a journey to explore the alternative route; a self-esteem building passage for children. He creates an intense feeling of understanding through both pathos and logos. Throughout the article he makes the reader remember the benefits that violence provided for them during childhood. He examines the life of a teenage girl who endured a “chaotic family situation” by listening to “gangsta rap.” (Jones 287) For the young girl, this music served as an escape from reality, an in her mind she was powerful, invulnerable, and a “leader to among her peers.” (Jones 287) This is soft evidence that verifies violence can be beneficial. But, he also acknowledges the fact that “violent
For my Genius Hour, I created a website called "Uncaped Heroes." The main goal of the website that I created is to showcase the heroes that may go unnoticed in everyday life. I created this so that I could practice my ELA standards, such as my writing skills and research. Also, I inadvertently practiced my public speaking skills when I did the interviews. This Genius Hour overall went well, except for slight difficulties like losing a person to interview and some minor website glitches. Though the high points such as actually completing the website, being able to interview other people, and the editing software I used outweighed the
This film highlights the flaws of humanity in a western world. The films ability to touch on topics of classism, prostitution, and alcoholism makes the content mature and unlike typical western films. This revolutionary and innovative western created a foundation for many future films. The sophistication of the content, and lack of adherence to the production code makes this film an “adult”
In essence, this paper will outline two significant themes related to crime and the effect of media explored in the film. Most notably, the nature of crime and criminality is explored thoroughly. Specifically, the effect limited opportunities and racial stereotyping can have on promoting an individual down a path of crime. Particular attention will be given to a scene in which a youthful fox wishes to join a prey-dominant Boy Scout troop, only to be rejected and humiliated because he is a predator. Furthermore, the concept of a moral panic caused by media news reporting is displayed excellently in a montage scene in which prey are scared of predators as the media reports that aggression and criminality is in their nature. Finally, I will critique how these issues are communicated in a neo-noir
In the movie “Boyz in the Hood” director John Singleton, paints a clear image of the problems that happen very often in the African American communities.
