Hope is a pernicious ideal if falsely given to someone and a blessing when it is used as a lifeline or for emotional support. In the narrative Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, Northup faces many instances where hope serves as his downfall but other times when hope is his only source of sanity during turbulent times. Hope is a belief that is expressed as a double edged sword throughout the novel and is imperative to the formation and flow of the story. Without the blunders and tribulations the story would be considered unrealistic and mundane.
In the beginning of the novel, Northrup’s descriptions and interpretations of the harsh slave life are vague but cautious, these only emphasized his security in his own life. However as the saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side, because no one is ever satisfied with their own life, and Solomon is tempted by the idea of earning a little more money, enough to financially secure his family, by two disguised slave traders. This is the first example of skewed, misinterpreted hope. They tempt Solomon with words like “a dollar a day” and “all expenses paid” (Northup, 13). Because of their “respectable appearance”

“For a long time we talked of our children, our past lives, and of the probabilities of escape.” (Northup, 40). Suddenly he is animated and excited to get home because he is reminded of his family and how he should survive for them. In this section of the book hope is beneficial to the titular character instead of detrimental to his state of mind. Once again the plot seems to take a turn for the better especially when once again Solomon meets another important character, a white sailor who turns out to be an aid for him. Solomon at first does not want to trust this man but takes the risk to recount his narrative and to his astonishment the sailor actually decides to help
Solomon was without work and needed to find a job to help support his family. He is over the moon excited when he finds out that the job he took was not the job he signed up for. He was drugged, kidnapped, and held as a slave. The way that it was spoken about when he first got there made you understand that people turning slaves in by tricking them was not unheard of. Brown and Hamilton promised Northup he would meet the circus in New York City, they promised he’d meet the circus in Washington D.C., they promised him high wages, they promised a quick departure from Washington D.C., then “postponed” it, forcing Northup to stay longer than planned in slave territory. These were all lies told. They even sat there and promised him safety in slave territory, but when he was drugged and Brown and Hamilton disappeared leaving him behind. He was a free man, rules are rules, and he should not have been taken. This however shows you that people don’t always play by the rules. However, it was very abrupt of him at the same time. He needed money to support his family and because of that he didn’t really look as deep into the job proposition as he could have.
Whips, paddles, shackles, and the stocks make repeat appearances, especially in Solomon’s description of his life as a newly kidnapped free man. Stripped of his clothing and nailed to the floor, Northup endured blow after blow to his naked body after he awoke in a slave pen; his enslavers paused only to ask if their prisoner would accept his new status. As Northup recollected, it was only after the paddle broke and his enslaver seized a rope to continue beating him that Northup was finally silenced into accepting his new identity as a slave. In these scenes of brutality, Northup insisted such sadistic events were so traumatic that he could still feel them while writing.“I thought I must die beneath the lashes of the accursed brute. Even now the flesh crawls upon my bones, as I recall the scene. I was all on fire. My sufferings I can compare to nothing else than the burning agonies of hell.”
The Theme of Hope in To Kill a Mockingbird And Scarlet Ibis Hope saves people. People who have hope and faith are often people who succeed in life and do well. Desmond Tutu has hope for the world when he says “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” (Tiny Buddha) In the story to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout shows hope in Boo Radley by continuing to grow closer to him and befriend him.
In the slave pen, a potential buyer asked him, “Well boy, where did you come from?”(36). He then replied, “From New York” (36). Solomon knew that there would be consequences for suggesting that he was from a free state. The risks of doing any of this were oblivious to him because he was not afraid to rebel against his master. Buyers in the slave pen most likely would not care about the feelings of the slaves, because they are supporters of slavery and do care about human rights or the injustices of slavery There was a slim chance that he would be saved, but there was a very high chance that he would be punished.
Solomon Northup was a free black living in New York who was lured south, kidnapped, and sold into slavery. His memoir, written shortly after his escape, recounts the harrowing events of his kidnapping and his dehumanizing and violent treatment as a slave on plantations in the interior of Louisiana where he worked in the cotton and sugar cane fields. During all those years, Northup looked for a chance to escape and was finally helped by an abolitionist carpenter with whom he chanced to work. With legal documents from the state of New York, Northup was finally freed and was able to bring legal action against his captors.
Solomon is a free man who is tricked into becoming a slave. He also is freed differently than most other slaves, finding freedom legally through a family friend, Henry B. Northup. Amos Gadsden, on the other hand, was born into slavery. His family had been enslaved since his grandmother was acquired by the family. He was freed by the Civil War, like most slaves in the narratives were. 12 Years A Slave was written only a few years after Solomon had been set free. Thus, he was giving a more first-hand account of slavery, because he had just recently experienced it and he had also experienced it as an adult. Amos, like most slaves, was younger when he had
These highly profitable crops were the work of many enslaved people, including Solomon Northup. As one laboring in the fields, Northup was subjected to hard labor from daylight to dark. Slaves were provided with minimal food and allowed minimal sleep. Overseers followed working slaves with a whip to punish any slow movements or small mistakes. Punishment would also ensue for any laborer whose daily yields fell short of the owner’s expectations (Twelve Years a Slave, 108-111). These abysmal conditions varied depending on the plantation owners’ wishes and the duties expected of each slave, but the pattern of hard labor fueled by the threat of violence along with insufficient sleep and nutrition was exceedingly
In his true-life narrative "Twelve Years a Slave," Solomon Northup is a free man who is deceived into a situation that brings about his capture and ultimate misfortune to become a slave in the south. Solomon is a husband and father. Northup writes:
Ford was known as being very kind to Solomon. However, William Prince Ford had to give Solomon back to the slave market due to finances. Northup’s second owner was John M. Tibaut who was very brutal to Solomon. Northup was later rescued by Ford’s overseer, Andrew Chafin. He was then sent to Edwin Epps and was a slave under him for the next ten years. His owner, Edwin Epps, put Solomon in charge over the rest of the slaves. Solomon tried many times to escape, but was never successful. Finally, in June of 1852, he was able to send letters to his friends and family back home in New York. In these letters, he told them where he was and all that had happened to him. In November of 1852, there was a widespread search in order to find Solomon. Solomon was found in the same year. On January 4, 1853, Solomon legally obtained total freedom. He was then reunited with his family and friends.
“My object is, to give a candid and truthful statement of facts: to repeat the story of my life, without exaggeration, leaving it for others to determine” (3). Solomon Northup is honest to readers from the very beginning of his novel. Northup’s main purpose in writing his story was to reveal to white Northerners a first-person narrative the true horrors of slavery, therefore adding fire to the growing reform of America’s age-old system.
Northup sets out to convince readers that his account of slavery is the truth. The detailed accounts that Solomon took to recreate his slave experience proves to be effective. Solomons story takes the aspect of being a free man, to enslavement in the South. Northup uses great parallelism in his narrative, often
George Orwell is a celebrated novelist well known for his political satire in the fairy tale, "Animal Farm." The theme of power in the book is recurring and greatly present throughout the piece. Through the use of characterization, conflict, and irony, Orwell shows that those in the position of power can become like it's predecessor.
I chose “Howl” to examine because it describes in great detail the anger, frustration, and self-destruction of Allen’s generation. Allen felt that his generation conformed to standards and to the American culture. Thus, he uses the poem, “Howl”, to express his anger and refusal to conform to America’s standards. The title of the poem suggests themes in the poem like madness and anger toward conformity. Moreover, the title suggests the theme of expression in the form of angry words and lines.

This film is a depiction of the cruelty of American slavery in the 1800s. Made by the British director, Steve McQueen, is enough to show the Americans reticence on the subject. Slavery may have stopped many years ago, however, it still plays a significant role in people’s attitudes today.
