In 1450 Eritrea was a small province located in North-East Africa. Eritrea fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1557, and the Turks claimed it as one of their colonies. The Ottoman Turks had easy access to Eritrea, as it borders the Red Sea. Seeing this as an opportunity, the Turks conquered the port city of Massawa, along with its’ bordering cities, and administered a new area named the province of Habesh. The Ottoman Turks controlled Eritrea for three centuries until the Rubattino (Italian) Navigation Company began to take territory along the coast near the town of Aseb in 1880; the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 allowed for this. Two years later, the territory was officially claimed as Italian Territory; Italian troops arrive at this new territory
