In 1450 Eritrea was a small province located in North-East Africa. Eritrea fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1557, and the Turks claimed it as one of their colonies. The Ottoman Turks had easy access to Eritrea, as it borders the Red Sea. Seeing this as an opportunity, the Turks conquered the port city of Massawa, along with its’ bordering cities, and administered a new area named the province of Habesh. The Ottoman Turks controlled Eritrea for three centuries until the Rubattino (Italian) Navigation Company began to take territory along the coast near the town of Aseb in 1880; the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 allowed for this. Two years later, the territory was officially claimed as Italian Territory; Italian troops arrive at this new territory
Antipator created a list of awe inspiring structures that spanned a period of time, of approximately three thousand years (Banks “Preface”). The list came to be called the, Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as each wonder was located in different areas of the world (Banks “Preface”). Europe could only claim one, two were in Africa, while three were located in Asia, leaving the final one on a small island south of Greece (Banks “Preface”). These structures were spoke of throughout time due to their magnificence and level of skill it took to create each masterpiece. Of the seven structures, only one still remains, the Great Pyramid of Giza, which also happens to be the oldest. Four of the remaining ancient wonders will

African Kingdoms were civilized prior to the accession of Europeans in the 15th century. African Kingdoms, such as Ghana, Mali and, Aksum were already progressive in the areas of trade, wealth, and overall advancement. Aksum’s location benefited the region’s advancement by making it a trading center. Mansa Musa was one of the most generous people who expanded the Mali empire through wealth. Through trade and wealth came overall advancement, which brought the rise of literature and art.
The early civilizations of Africa were different in many of their cultural traits. One common trait they did have in common was the importance of trade in their society. Although trade was good for the African civilizations, there was consequences that followed trading. I will be using documents B, F, and D to support how early African civilizations had consequences from trading. In document B it states that, “The door of the pavilion is guarded by dogs on an excellent breed… who wear collars of gold and silver,” this quote helps support the idea that Ghana had lots of gold and wealth.
Ancient Africa held many treasures like gold and salt that could be used to build a large empire. A few men did exactly that. African empires were wealthy and great before men from Europe came onto the scene. Before the arrival of the Europeans, African civilizations from 300 to 1400 CE were wealthy, flourished in trade, and encouraged things like education, the arts, and security.
In their role of empirical dominance throughout 13th century Eurasia, the Mongol’s were nomadic tribes of herders and raiders north of China, under the leadership of Genghis Khan. Born under the name Temujin, Genghis traits of charisma and reputation as a tactician won over his people’s support. Thus through the act of uniting groups of the steppe (region), he was crowned Khan of Khan in 1206. As quoted from Hugh Kennedy’s book Mongols, Huns and Viking's nomads at war” “the Mongols were triumphant in every major engagement fought up to ‘Ayan Jalut in 1260’ “. A crucial factor unique to this success was the nature of Mongol soldiers in which their life-styles demanded skills such as archery and horseback riding, which was also essential in
Around the year 1897 Edward Morel noticed something that would change the way the modern world viewed the colonization of Africa and the supposed “humanitarian” work there forever (Hochschild 1). Morel worked for an English shipping company that was responsible for cargo going between the Congo Free State and Belgium. What Morel noticed was that ships from Africa were filled with rich, exotic goods like rubber and ivory, but the ships headed to Africa from Belgium were filled with military members and various firearms and ammunition (Hochschild 2). Morel made the conclusion that the cause of this odd “trade” between Europe and Africa was slave labor. European colonization of Africa was a slow, arduous process resulting in the deaths of
There are plenty of changes yet some no changes in the trade works between Africa and Eurasia from 300CE-1450CE. The motives for creating trade relations was to get the necessary goods to live on as well as becoming richer despite of living in different regions. However the goods that were traded changed like gold, salt, indigo, and Persian rugs. As well as the trading of ideas that changed technology and religion.
Who are the Nubians? Nubians are people of northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Their history and traditions can be traced to the dawn of civilization. They settled first along the banks of the Nile from Aswan. Along the Nile, they developed one of the oldest and greatest civilizations in Africa until they lost their last kingdom five centuries ago. The Nubians remained as the main rivals to the homeland of Africa’s earliest black culture with a history that can be traced from 3800 B.C. onward through the monuments and artifacts. Ancient Nubia was a land of great natural wealth, gold mines, ebony, ivory and incense that its neighbors always prized. Sudan had
Until sometime before 1500 A.D., European civilizations were less technologically advanced than Eastern civilizations, e.g. China. Such Eastern countries were well into what Tonio Andrade terms “the Gunpowder Age”. Modernization succeeds this age and sometime before 1500 A.D., Western civilizations gained Eastern military technology and fitted it to push them ahead in warfare and in turn, modernity. A trend in modernity in European states is an advancement of war and the accompanying technology. In looking at the 19th century, those countries that are perceived as “modern” are far ahead in war technology than those countries perceived as “pre-modern”. An example of such modernity exists in Britain in their military might. Contrasting
The Year 1492 is considered to be a significant year in the history of Europe, America, and Africa, Among others, because of the number of significant events that took place during it. In the middle kingdom, there was a small village called____. This village was famous for having colossal mountain called_____. The mountain was very lavished with a rich ecosystem that include many unknown animals to mankind, and on top of the mountain there was an ancient monk that had been told to give people the power of the “superior person” or Junzi. Once every 1000th lunar moon, he hurries to the village to pick a family to have a chance to be Junzi. On one lunar moon the ancient monk came down and picked the Xang family. The Xang family had built a bad reputation within the village. Luckily, they’re a wealthy family that had built their fortunes from their money that had built up for many generations. The wealthy family had four sons. The monk wanted to see if one of the four sons can bring back the honor to their family. The old monk told the family that the four sons must come on top of the mountain and bring a part of strength, part of wisdom, and a part of courage. These parts will show the characteristics that a Junzi must have to obtain the title Junzi. With the title one can bring back the lost honor back to the family and the son will become Junzi. Each part must be given on top of the mountain at dusk by tomorrow. After the monk told the family about the request, the ancient monk returned to the top of the mountain. The sons stayed up all night thinking what to take to the old monk. While the older sibling thought of the items, the youngest son

Welcome to Crash Course Civilizations 101! Today we will discuss one of the most prominent civilizations of the middle kingdom, the Eltanin civilization. Now before we jump in let’s talk about what exactly is a civilization. Textbook definition defines it as: the process by which a society or place reaches an advanced stage of social development and organization, but a civilization is more than just that. It is the culture a group of people possesses which is sustained over a period of time which shapes history in one way or another. Most civilizations all stemmed from one life changing event, the agricultural revolution. As the first agricultural revolution occurred from 10,000 BC to 2000 BC, people started to settle and cultivate land by planting crops and raising animals. Although blossoming from different areas around the world, they all had certain similar aspects such as developing unique ways of supporting themselves and upholding their society. The start of this transition is known as the middle kingdom. Today we will be discussing one of the most prominent civilizations of the middle kingdom, the Eltanin civilization, who lasted what scientists like to call, A LONG TIME..Before we dive into who they were and how they impacted history, let’s talk about how they originated.
