18 Year Old Adult or Child
This is a letter to my parents, and to every eighteen-year old’s parents in the nation. We are the youth of America, and we need to be heard. As i sit down at my computer and begin to write i would like to make one thing very clear to all who read this:
I write from the standpoint of , with support from a few experts, but no one else. There are many things involved in upholding a healthy, and loving relationship with your child when you are the parent of an eighteen year-old. To some, your children are treated as adults, but to you they are still children. As that child goes away to college, he or she becomes independent from you for the first time ever. This independence brings on a lot of

Second, parents are seeing maturity outright these days. This maturity comes through most in different types of language children begin to use with thier parents, which at times parents may find inappropriate. This ties into the third reason which is an ethical consideration parents are forced to make as to at what point thier children are grown and no longer can be looked down upon in an authoritative manner. Although many parents try to smooth things over with thier children when they come home for breaks just to find over summer that they have been in denial, most parent realize quickly that they are losing thier children to thier own individualities. If i write this paper for one purpose let with the purpose of illustrating to you, our parents, what we need as your children in order to become competent adults. Many of you parents will take on the responsibility of weighing out the ethical parental role and where it should cease, vs. the natural role. In all of the animal kingdom, mothers raise thier young to have survival, and social skills, once that teaching is completed they are done parenting. In humans however, this line is very broad leaving some forty-year olds with mothers and some twelve year olds without. This is a huge discrepancy and expert Gine Richardson says “ This phenomenon in premature withdraw from parental responsibilities is as detrimental to a young adult’s development as parents
But children are a special case they cannot always stand up for themselves. They therefore need a special set of rights which take in to consideration their vulnerability and which ensures the adults that surround them take responsibly for their welfare, protection and development.
When the children are incapable, nurses have moral responsibility to assist parents in decision making in the children's best interest. "Substituting an adult judgement of what is in a child’s best interest is not necessarily equivalent with the child’s best interest (Coyne and Harder, 2011)." Acting in a child’s best interest requires parents and health professionals to take children's view seriously and give priority consideration to the impact of their decisions on children (Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children (CCRC). The adults have responsibilities towards their children to enable them in making decision but they do not have rights to make decision for their children (Lowden, 2002). Children should not be viewed as property. The first step in protecting the rights of children as outlined in the CRC is to view them as citizens (Van Daalen-Smith, 2010). When parents claim that the child belongs to them, they are establishing an ownership notion. Children should be respected as active contributor not as passive recipient of the health care (Maconochie and McNeill, 2010). Therefore, parental role in decision making for their children should be complementary not

Did you know, that in the United States alone, Over 200,000 children are charged and imprisoned every year as adults? Early in the 20th century, most states established juvenile courts to rehabilitate and not just punish youthful offenders. The system was designed for children to have a second chance at their lives. “A separate juvenile-justice system, which sought to rehabilitate and not just punish children, was part of a movement by progressives to create a legally defined adolescence through the passage of child-labor and compulsory education laws and the creation of parks and open spaces.”(How to reduce crime Pg 1) Although the view on juveniles committing brutal crimes is nearly inconceivable, it is not a solution to give juveniles adult consequences because the effects of the adult system on juveniles are not effective.
Understandably, the welfare of children is a sensitive topic to many and a subject that it much more complicated than one person’s opinion. It seems like everyone has something to say about it and for good reason. However, with all the input, not all ideas will be the same. There are extremes and then there places in the ‘middle’ where opinions can fall. One of those opinions seems to be the most widely believed: parents have no right to give up their parental rights when they were the ones who decided to have them in the first place, except in extreme circumstances.
The reasoning for my logic being that children spend the majority of their time at home or in the presence of their family,
According to Caldwell (1961) the juvenile justice system is based on the principle that youth are developmentally and fundamentally different from adults. According to Mack (1909) the focus of the juvenile justice system has shifted from “was the crime committed” to “why did the child commit the crime”, “how can we help the child”. When performing as it is designed and up to the initial intentions, the juvenile court balances rehabilitation (treatment) of the offender with suitable sanctions when necessary such as incarceration. According to Griffin (2008) in some cases juveniles may be required to be “transferred” to adult court. In this paper I am going to discuss the three primary mechanisms of waiver to adult court: judicial waiver
For the most part, parents have the best interest of their children at heart. However, there are unfortunately many cases throughout the United States where parents are unable to, for one reason or another, take care of their children. Sometimes, this can be seen as a health issue of the parents. Sometimes, parents are unable to raise their children well due to physical, financial, and/or emotional issues. Other times, parents do not have the best interests of their children in mind and can be neglectful or abusive to them. In these circumstances, the state may become involved and step into
A common piece of everybody’s vocabulary today is a word used in various contexts with little understanding to comprehend what it really means. “Maturity”, the stream of questions that come to our mind when we begin to ponder on the eight letter word is numerous. The most basic being, “What is maturity? How does one step up on the pedestal of maturity? And how do we measure maturity?” Einstein puts his perspective on maturity in an even more complicated manner, “I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity”, this view point does paint us a picture of maturity, but leads us to a whole new world of mystification.
