The fashions of the past 100 years greatly differ from the styles of the present. Some of the trends of the trends of our generation were inspired by those years, while others remain out of style. Our fashions are not only brought back from the past, but some are brand new ideas fashion designers create. Fashion is an alternating compilation of styles that suffice diverse people and contradistinctive times. Fashion can be considered an expressive art, with the human physique as its canvas, and as a symbolization of one’s class, employment, imagination, and emotions.
In the 1920’s, skirt and dress hemlines rose and waistlines lowered to the hip. These changes accompanied by the boyish flapper fashions marked the 1920’s as a decade of decadence

Skirts and dresses would also be made out of anything that could be found within a home (like curtains, nightgowns, or bed sheets) due to the illegality of using excess fabric when making an outfit from about 1942 to 1947. During the war-torn forties, nylon and silk were replaced with rayon and viscose for formal tops, while terry cloth, linen, and canvas were used for leisure shirts. Women who worked during World War 2 wore military style shirts that had button-up collars, and women who were a part of the American Woman’s Auxiliary Corps would wear a full war military outfit.
With the economic boom in the 1950’s, glamor became fashionable once again. A-line and pencil skirts were very popular form-fitting fashions. Dresses in the decade would often feature stylish ruffles or lace accents and were usually knee-length or tea-length. After World War 2 ended, up until the mid-1950’s, trends in women’s fashion changed again. Round-neck styles on sleeveless shirts or long sleeve shirts were popular, as well as polo-necks. Dolman sleeves dominated fashionable tops in the fifties and sixties,

Skirts and dresses were longer and featured straight lines and serious design. As more women joined the professional workforce, business suits became a trend for women, with straight conservative skirts and broad-shouldered blazers topped the look. Fashion became highly influenced by music, celebrities, and movies with iconic looks shown off by Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and movie star Molly Ringwald. As styles became slightly more casual, T-shirts and polo’s became acceptable tops, and for formal or business wear, shoulder pads, blazers, dress shirts, and sweaters were popular for men and women in the
Fashion in the early nineteen twenties was all about comfort. Men’s pants got wider and women stopped wearing their corsets and tight dresses, while older women of the age considered this scandalous and still held the thought that women should not show their ankle. Though the majority of adults disagreed with the fashion revolution, young women continually hiked up their skirts, stayed out late, and kept up with fashion trends. Times were changing, and thus the flapper age was born. Hemlines rose to the knee, and then later above it- exposing the muscular
“In any era, fashion is a reflection of the time and what is going on in the culture politically, socially and economically.”1 The 1920’s witnessed a variety of dramatic changes for women; these changes, such as shorter dresses and stronger attitudes occurred primarily after World War I in spite of the prolonged development of women 's’ rights through 1914 and 1920. With their new hair, fashion styles, and attitudes, women had started what became known as the “Flapper Era”.
The style and cut of women's clothing during the 1920's changed drastically. Waistlines dropped dramatically while hemlines rose scandalously. Turned-down hose were no longer black, but beige. Rouged knees, bobbed hair, and figureless figures characterized the "radical flappers". These women violated many of the rules dictating appropriate clothing and behavior for women. The
Before the 1920’s, women’s attire was considered fairly modern. Women would have worn clothing with more of a silhouette than clothing that was loose and flowy. The length of their dresses never revealed more of their leg than just their ankle. Women received bad reputations when showing their knees or even their calfs. Women in the 1920’s also had a different ideal figure than most women do today. The body types women wanted to achieve also transformed into a more feminine look. This look consisted of low bust lines, higher hems lines, and showing off more curves than ever before. These women became unapologetically fearless.
The 1920’s fashion was a period of liberation, change, and even more importantly a movement towards the modern era. Fashion in the 1920’s varied throughout the decade but one could see the noticeable change from the previous fashion statements and eras. At the start of the decade, women began emancipating themselves from the constricting fashions by wearing more comfortable apparel. As women gained more rights and World War I forced them to become more independent, flappers came to be, mass-produced garments became available, and artistic movements increased in popularity, one can see how the fashions from the roaring twenties characterized the time and redefined womanhood. How adolescence behaved during the 1920’s altered the future generations to come in many different ways. One of these ways includes how they dressed themselves. Before the 1920’s girls wore dresses normally past their knees, but during this era they began to wear shorter clothing items above their knees. Very similar nowadays, girls are wearing
The 1920s were a time of cultural embrace and the creation of different, helpful and brilliant new ideas in the United States of America. One new idea was fashion, which identifies the social class people would belong to, and what they would do for an occupation. Men and women had two different types of clothing, and what the women did has inspired others to embrace themselves and their body. During this period of time, women began exploring their freedom and equality. Fashion helped them find their inner self, and also the inequality among different ethnic groups was brought into light. This roaring decade of change helped turn the Harlem area into something no one has ever seen before, unity and freedom.
Throughout the 1920s through the 1950s Women’s clothing in America was affected by World War II, which lead to the exploration of different styles, the encounter of new trends and the exchange of ideas and new styles.
Fashion is very important in modern day society, and can be seen all around. Most of what people know about fashion today came from the fashion during the renaissance. From the vibrant fabrics to the spectacular jewels, renaissance fashion has been thoroughly threaded in the fashion of modern society. Modern day women often wear shorty, fun gowns, tightly fitting jeans, and lower cut tops. Popular fashion trends for men in modern society include saggy jeans, V-neck shirts, and stylish watches. “A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so unbearable that we are compelled to alter it every six months” (Oscar Wilde). Fashion in modern day society is ever changing, but most changes do not stray too far from the original product.
Women that wore this post World War style were called flappers. Flappers bobbed their hair and “ flattened their chest with tight bands of cloth in order to look as young and boyish as possible” (Flappers). Flappers did not just model a new style, they also brought a new representation of a ideal women to society. These women also would do activities that were previously deemed improper for women to do like smoking, drinking, talking slang, and dancing the jazz inspired dance. enclosing flappers can be viewed as the beginning of the feminist movement, because they changed the ideology that men had of women.(Flappers).
Women took on jobs that had traditionally belonged to men as they departed for war, and women’s clothing shifted to reflect this. Women working in factories often wore one-piece suits as required by their employers (“American Women”). The United States government also began to place bans on fabric consumption during the war. For example, it mandated that swimwear fabric be lowered by ten percent, a requirement that led to the invention of two-piece bathing suits (Pendergast 841). Following World War II, the American economy boomed, as did the women’s fashion industry. Fashion designer Christian Dior debuted his groundbreaking collection, “The New Look,” in 1947, which featured many garments with excess fabric (Pendergast 835). The message of the line was clear: no longer would people be governed by wartime
The 1920’s, also called the roaring 20’s, was a time of change. During this time period the fashion for both men and women was changing immensely. The aftermath of WWI caused America to enter a vigorous era. As a result of the role of women during the war, many customs and morals were changing. The Stock Market started booming, many new dances and music came about, and women got the right to vote and enter the workforce. There was an uprise in almost every activity, and fashion was definitely one (Tirocchi, Anna and Laura). Although fashion varied throughout the decade, one could notice a drastic change from the prior fashion.
The Years between the 1950’s and 1960’s was an explosive time in fashion. The 50’s represented an out coming of the new generation. People began to gain their own personal style and appearance, influenced by films and singers (“Vintage Fashion”). Their styles incorporated leather, jeans, corduroy, and the ballet shoes for the girls. Men’s wear began to drastically change. Men would wear a leather jacket, with jeans that narrowed at the bottom, and a simple t-shirt (Peacock 210-211). This was the first time in history that jeans were not just worn by the working class but by all men (“Brief History”). The man’s lust for flesh grew during this time, so women’s skirts began to get shorter and the bikini was invented. Clothes were made to glorify the female body and emphasize every curve. It wasn’t until the Barbie doll was created in the late 50’s that young girls began to have a separate fashion from their mothers. Young girls would wear sweaters with full skirts or pants
