In the novel 1984, by George Orwell, the two main characters, Julia and Winston provide a thrilling tale for the readers. Through character analysis, the two of them may seem very similar yet in many more ways they are different. Julia and Winston find joy in breaking the laws together but for different reasons. Julia appears to be consumed with a desire to do wrong to stand up to the party by sleeping around whereas Winston rebels through a political sense as he wants to test the limits of the party. Julia and Winston are most alike in their rebellion against the party and they are alike in their personalities, yet they contrast in their main goal.

Firstly, the most evident comparison is that Julia and Winston are alike in their rebellion against the Party as they have no wish to remain slaves to the Party. This is demonstrated when the both of them are having a secret love affair which goes against all the Party teachings, as the Party aims to suppress such emotions between individuals. As Winston and Julia reflect on their affair they say, “We are the dead.” (Page 170) They both say this as they realize, their affair is a crime and eventually, they will be caught but they continue to rebel as they enjoy breaking the law. In addition to the affair, Winston rebels by writing in his diary “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” (page 19) and Julia rebels by not following the strict sexual code as she wants to.
