Despite 1984 being written more than 60 years ago, it is still relevant to this day. The book 1984 contains many aspects that can still be relatable today. It also serves as a warning for the future that still applies today. One way that 1984 is still relevant today is that the book deals with surveillance. In today's world surveillance is an important issue since due to the increased use of technology it is easier to monitor people. In 1984 the government uses telescreens and other technology to watch and listen in on it’s citizens to make sure they are not doing anything that the party disapproves of. One of the famous lines in the book is even “Big Brother is watching you”, which means that the party is watching what everyone does. All of this is relevant since in today's world the U.S. government does monitor what its citizens do online somewhat.This shows that the fear of always being watched is valid fear and something people should be concerned about. …show more content…

This is shown in the book by the proles not seeming to know much about or seeming to care about the state their country is in. Despite the proles having a number advantage over the people in charge they still chose to be compliant and not try to change things for the better. Today people are not very involved in government. When people go to vote there are some that don’t know about every person that is running for a position in government. People also aren’t as involved in issues as they should be. The book 1984 is also relevant today since it deals with freedom. In the book it has the thought police, which tries to find people who think things outside of what the party wants them to think. The government tries to control everything in its citizens lives. The book tries to show how important freedom of thought and speech are to have.
