1984 was a novel written by George Orwell, and exemplified his ideologies of big government. Orwell wrote this book as a social commentary at the start of the cold war. Orwell saw how communism truly was and it’s power to oppress people. He was very wary of large government. And wanted to inform the American people of what they were actually supporting in 1949. Although 1984 seemed like a distant dystopian future, the Bush and Obama administrations have been abusing their powers and unjustifiably limiting the civil liberties and rights of its people in the sake of claiming that it is all in the guise of “War on Terror”. The American public has torn between giving up their rights, and having more national security. But why do you have to chose …show more content…
Like the collection of millions of people’s phone records , without their consent or without reason. The NSA has many loopholes, one of which includes Prism, which collects information from Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo. Ackerman, Spencer, and James Ball. "NSA Performed Warrantless Searches on Americans' Calls and Emails – Clapper." The Guardian. Guardian News and Media, 2014. Web. 21 May 2016. IT violates many constitutional rights, it even prevent public trial from occurring for many months. Many have even claimed that the US’s attempt to try to protect us has mirrored that of Nazi Germany. America like the past Germany has become obsessed with monitoring, tracking, and watching the general population. Even increased gun control was something Hitler was very vocal about, and so has Obama, “Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long after-wards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.” Gun control never really affects the criminals, just law abiding citizens, just like many other laws that limit people’s
The events that took place on September 11th 2001 have forever changed the United Sates. On that day it was clear that our borders were not secure. Our nation’s security was questioned, and our national security plan, as a result, had to change. President Bush did what he felt was needed at the time, laying out the foundation for a surveillance apparatus, involving the Patriot Act and the National Security Agency. This United States’ surveillance apparatus though, draws a thin line between privacy and security, forcing us to trade our liberty for security. By trading our liberty for security we lose both, and thus, move towards losing our democracy.
They started this after the September 11th attacks in 2001, in order to find any terrorist activity. With both monitoring citizens’ every move, citizens feel as if they have no rights or privacy in their
The NSA, The National Security Agency that is under the government control was initially intended to protect the USA by tethering through technology devices to attempt to pick up any suspicious activities. The problem is that many feel as if the NSA has no right to evade their privacy. The NSA should be penalize every time they do so, or should have some type of warrant, but only for last resort, or stopped completely. There are many other ways to go about finding troublesome threats like antagonist programs like CDT as I mentioned earlier. Having your privacy tampered with isn’t worth it. The NSA is not needed that bad.
In the name of national security, our country infringes on the personal liberties of its citizens. Americans nationwide are being violated, as the government is not respecting their fourth, sixth, and eighth amendment rights. The founding fathers ensured that Americans were granted certain inalienable rights, but these liberties are dwindling exponentially, as we slide down a Constitutional slippery slope. The “War on Terror” has seriously compromised many personal liberties. From the Patriot Act’s comprehensive definition of domestic terrorism, to the unlawful treatment of inmates at Guantanamo Bay, the principles of due process, privacy, and equal protection under the law have been drastically undermined by a prying and intrusive government.
In the entire span of the United States history, the commitment of the protection of Americans civil liberties have frequently been tested and strained. The biggest breach of national security was on September 11, 2001 which ended in the compromise of the trust of American people because they had felt lied to and vulnerable all because of a broken pact and a failure to protect America with an agency founded to prevent such a catastrophe. After these acts of terror Congress felt they needed to do better and step up their game, they decided it was time to act so just one vote short of unanimous bipartisan support, they passed the USA Patriot Act. The measure gave law enforcement officials sweeping new powers to conduct searches without warrants,
All this control will result in is a rise in black market gun sales. This add suggest gun control is not the way to stop crime. As depicted in the picture the criminal will have a gun before and after, no matter what. Passing a weapon ban will solely strip your constitutional rights as an American to bear arms and make us dependent on the government and police for protection from criminals. Agreeing to gun confiscation will say goodbye to the day of being self-reliant and protecting your
Every move you make on the Internet can be recorded step by step, website to website. While researching articles on internet surveillance one said how US government has been forcing American telecommunication companies to turn over the call records of every one of their customers to allow the NSA to search them with a reason.(Glenn Greenwald. NSA collecting phone…). However I find this completely wrong, the government shouldn’t be having our call records unless they have some sort of evidence that we are a suspect or threat to this country. It also mentioned how the “NSA believes this general monitoring of our electronic communications is justified because the entire process takes a small amount of seconds”.(Glenn Greenwald. NSA collecting phone…). Despite the general illusion that today’s surveillance technology is used for a good purpose, people should be aware of the consequences when it’s used in the wrong
To some, the United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) act is a law essential to winning the War on Terrorism; for others, this act is viewed with utmost contempt for its Orwellian nature allowing Big Brother to read your email and look through your library records. The security versus liberty debate prevails with both sides citing legal and ethical reasons in support or in opposition to this controversial act.

While Americans were contemplating gun control proposals in the wake of mass shootings at a Colorado School, another gunman massacred 50 people in a club in Orlando. This incident brought heated political exchanges between President Obama and Trump, the Republican presidential candidate. It is estimated that in 2015 alone, there were more than 351 mass shootings in the United States. This is a worrying trend that should be reversed as soon as possible. Surprisingly, the trend has divided Americans into two groups. On one extreme end, there are those Americans who believe that the government should enforce gun control. On the other end, some Americans insist that stricter gun controls will not help in the fight against killings. In this light, this paper will try to provide a detailed analysis of the gun control debate while highlighting the various points made by the proponents and opponents of the gun control. The essay posits that gun control is counterproductive.
In the novel 1984 George Orwell demonstrates how the government maintains power through mind control and manipulation of the masses. Orwell hints that when the government (Big Brother), holds too much power they become crooked and devious towards the rest of the population. In a nutshell Orwell is conveying that a corrupt government destroys all chances for an ideal society. Collectively, George Orwell made a prediction of what was going to happen, and it has become a reality to some extent. Overall this is a great book for the current political state.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 our country underwent a change that has drastically affected the fundamental values that our founding fathers instilled in this country. Since that tragic day in September the aftermath of the attacks has started to implicate our Civil Liberties that in this country we hold so dear. Just 45 days after the September 11 attacks, with virtually no debate, Congress passed the USA Patriot Act on October 5th, 2001. This act expanded the surveillance powers of domestic law enforcement and international intelligence agencies. The controversy that must be discussed is whether or not this legislation fully or in part has violated the Constitution and/or endangered our civil
Many of the current laws seem to be designed to take guns of out the hands of responsible gun owners, but do nothing to address the non law-abiding citizens. Both sides of the gun control argument need to work together to protect second amendment rights while protecting citizens of the country from needless gun violence. Teddy Roosevelt famously on the importance of gun control that “The great body of our citizens shoot less as times goes on. We should encourage rifle practice among schoolboys, and indeed among all classes, as well as in the military services by every means in our power. Thus, and not otherwise, may we be able to assist in preserving peace in the world” (Roosevelt 5). The United States have seen a trend of gun violence reductions
