Julia and Winston first met at Victory Square when “[Julia] stumbled and fell almost flat on her face… Already [Winston] had instinctively started forward to help her” (Orwell 105). For their first tryst, they met at the Golden Country like in Winston’s dream. It was “a half-hour railway journey” (115) from the station. Both Julia and Winston are against the party. Winston is cautious and thinks of the future generations while Julia is selfish and only thinks of herself.
By eliminating love, the party loyalty was preserved. Julia’s and Winston’s secret love affair “was a blow struck against the Party. It was a political act” (126) that the party did not want. Julia and Winston meet with him to join the brotherhood. As members of the brotherhood, Julia and Winston will have to be “prepared to cheat, to forge, to blackmail, to corrupt the minds of children, to distribute habit-forming drugs, to encourage prostitution, to disseminate venereal diseases -- to do anything which is likely to cause demoralization and weaken the power of the party” (172). They are willing to help controlling but are unwilling to betray each other. O’Brien gives them a copy of Goldstein’s book and the last line of the song that brainwashes.
When Julia tells Winston that even though the party can torture a person and make him say anything, they cannot make him believe it is a false statement. It is hard to brainwash a person, but it is possible. Trauma can make it easier for manipulation. The person will eventually be tortured too much and give up. The party has the member practice doublethink to forget about ideas they don't
