Symbolism
Images or ideas that contain symbolic meanings aside from their apparent surface can correctly the definition of symbolism. George Orwell’s novel 1984 holds numerous examples of symbolism that pertain to today and the clever references he puts in that predict the book’s conclusion. Some of these symbols include Winston’s paperweight, a prole woman singing outside of a window, the St. Clement’s Church picture and rhyme, the phrase “the place where there is no darkness”, and many more symbols all contain symbols that either reference a theme of the novel or a specific idea that the novel conveys. Clement’s Church picture and rhyme have multiple meanings both the picture and rhyme and represent what the power has and will do to both Winston and Julia in the novel. The St. Clement’s Church picture is a double symbol. For Winston it symbolizes a stolen past which the Party’s control has taken away. The St. Clement’s Church picture also symbolizes the Party’s complete power and betrayal of humanity, since the picture hides the telescreen by which the Party monitors Winston when he believes himself to be safe. The telescreens are also a visible symbol of the Party’s constant monitoring of its subjects with their dual ability to blast Party propaganda and to view and hear the exact goings-on in a room. They also symbolize the tendency of totalitarian governments to abuse technology to further their own standards instead of caring and improving standards for their citizens. The St. Clement’s Church song or jingle, a mysterious and ominous song mentioned multiple times in the novel, mystify both Winston and Julia. Its ending “Here comes the chopper to chop off your heads!” foreshadows their eventual capture, imprisonment, and torture for both Winston and Julia.
