In 1990 popular culture had a big effect on things like TV and what people wore. One of these people who were apart of popular culture was Will Smith. Will stared on a show called Fresh Prince of Baler. This was more of a comedy and family show. The show kicked off wills carrier. As the show progressed will started having things like custom shirts and over time became rich. But this was just the begging in later years he started and movies. Will also went on to even raise a family. My point is that the 1990 started a lot of people carriers and was great for publicly. National events can be good or bad but in this case it’s bad. On 1990 march 18th the biggest theft in history occurred. This took place at the Gardner Museum in Boston
The 90s was anything but an ordinary era, with its booming entertainment industry, production of hot new foods, basketball players like Magic Johnson, and the presidential elections of Clinton and Bush. The 90s will always be an unforgettable decade. The banging music industry had incredible artist like Nirvana, and Britney Spears, who are both still popular today.Popular sitcoms like Friends, and Full House kept watchers eyes glued to their televisions. The MLB strike from 94 'to 95’ shocked America, as did Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls with his extreme amount of talent in the NBA. Sports were not the only thing shocking America though, the hot new candy Baby Bottle Pops, and Melody Pops, were some of the most popular new candies of
In 1985 television started a show called Growing Pains. It was a series that went from 1985 to the year 1992. They also started a show called Knight Riders that started in 1982. It lasted 10 years so it ended in a 1992. In the 1980’s girls came up with a new look and would wear a bunch of different colors and crazy pants and they would crimp their hair and poof it up. They wore crazy looking shoes normally converse crazy colors as well. They never matched their clothes on purpose. Men wore leather jackets and bro-tanks. They would also wear converse like the ladies. Motorcycles were famous back in the days for men. They mostly on wore jeans never wore dress pants and sometimes would wear shorts. Music that was popular in the 1980’s was rock n’
Seeker churches show how Christianity has been influenced by popular culture for a number of reasons. One of those reasons being the contemporary atmosphere in these churches. Often, the area from which the preacher delivers his message appears more like a rock stage than a traditional church. Additionally, these churches tend to play more contemporary music with Christian messages. This contemporary setting and the contemporary music cater to people who do not want the traditional church atmosphere, but still want to receive service and sermons. Additionally, many of these churches do not identify with a denomination of Christianity, and some do not even identify with Christianity at all. An example of this type of “seeker church” is the Crossroads church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The 1990’s was an iconic era. Even today people are wearing 90’s styled clothing. The choker is one example. Another could be baggy clothes. Some people are even rocking Tommy Hilfiger baggy sweaters with chokers. Over-all, it seems that people are just trying to bring it back.
In New York City, the hip hop subculture was formed, this was also the place where graffiti was developed. Graffiti includes a lot of hip hop elements and the gradually became real art works. Some people started to see it is not only as a type of protest, but rather than a sort of art. (White, 2014)
Pop Culture permeates our society and is now the first and last thing we think about every day. Almost every waking moment includes pop culture in some way, as society has embraced this new way of life. Parents use electronics to entertain their children and keep them out of the way, and children use them to avoid their parents. Escapism, guilty pleasures and popular culture define each other in ways that they didn’t in the past and now our world is trying to reconcile it.
Today’s societal norms and popular culture instills the idea that being health conscious and exercising is necessary. Most Americans idealize the “perfect” body and will do anything to achieve this image. We, as an American public, are attracted to members of society who present themselves in a fit and healthy manner. Accordingly, there are many studies proving that active lifestyles will even increase work productivity, which can in turn create job promotions. However, what about workers who are not characterized as slender or in shape? Are they at a disadvantage compared to their colleagues? In class lecture, we discussed what archetypes and myths are and their relevance within cultures. Archetypes are defined as widely recurring actions, objects, or events with a powerful meaning. Myths are composed of these archetypes along with other powerful signs that are ingrained in society because they are constantly retold. Myths can impact our biases and standards unconsciously, as we become accustomed to these widespread narratives in our communities. Within many industries, the myth of weight discrimination in the workplace prohibits many employees from advancing in their careers. Based on my personal experience, the video, lecture, and book, the myth of workplace discrimination towards overweight individuals exists and is furthered because popular culture overemphasizes the ideal body type.
Chapter 3 in Major Problems with American Popular Culture discusses the meaning and purposes of popular culture in the 19th century American society. The text presents a variety of materials attributed to America popular culture of that time, such as accounts of Fejee Mermaid exposition, extracts from the 19th century Shakespeare's adaptations and the eyewitness testimony of the Astor Place Riot in 1849. Furthermore, the YouTube video sources discuss the concept of imagined community, first suggested by Benedict Anderson. Imagined community is discussed in the light of popular culture, which becomes an alternative instrument of imagining communities with the emergence of different types of media, it being film, theatre, news or internet.
Popular culture has served a major role in the way adolescents view drugs and drug use. Films portray characters revered by teenagers as drug users. But today, even alcohol commercials are targeted toward adolescents with their favorite musicians enjoying the advertised alcoholic beverages in the very same way children's favorite cartoon characters were drawn on boxes of sugary cereals.
Popular culture representations over the last few years have started to include different versions of the male. My own understandings of manhood influence my appreciation of representations within popular culture by allowing me to look beyond the surface and critically appreciate different and/or new variances of male. The standard male has gone beyond the Mark Walhberg, Justin Bieber, David Beckham underwear ads (Appendix 2). The hyper masculine with excessively large defined muscles is just one representation of male. New representations of nerd have started to permeate the airwaves. The Big Bang Theory features a stark contrast to the hyper masculine male; the young successful research scientist nerd/geek. It is very well received show,
The punk subculture, which centres on punk rock music, includes a diverse array of ideologies, fashions and forms of expression, including visual art, dance, literature and film. The subculture is largely characterized by anti-establishment views and the promotion of individual freedom. The punk subculture is centered on a loud, aggressive genre of rock music called punk rock. It is usually played by small bands consisting of a vocalist, one or two electric guitarists, an electric bassist, and a drummer.
Popular culture has manifested itself in a number of ways. Currently, the most commonly used method of spreading and exchanging opinions, ideas, art, and other concepts is through the internet. Never before has it been so easy to shed light on a person or an idea, giving it levels of popularity that were considered inconceivable in ages past. In many circumstances the way people are portrayed through pop-culture is most likely how they were perceived by the bulk of people. Pop/culture serves as a way to connect people; help them relate to one another over shared opinions and interests. It was and is the representative of the majority. But what of the times before the internet? How was pop-culture expressed in a time when people did not have the ability to express their thoughts and opinions with millions at a time almost instantaneously? Theatre is one of the most time-honored means of entertainment. Before television and computers and the internet, actors would don a costume and tell act for masses of people. It was a form of storytelling that was not limited to the literate or rich or the scholars, but could be enjoyed by anyone form any economic background. Through it we can see our history and opinions in the form of characters, plots, and settings. We can observe the changing of mainstream opinions through the common themes and recurring motifs in the most popular plays.
What is pop culture? Wikipedia defines it as,”the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture”, at a given time. Like all things, the pop culture of a civilization grows and changes with the passage of time and important events. However, past events often can influence pop culture of the future, as it determines what a society may deem an important upcoming event to adapt to. Thusly, it is possible to see links in a community from two different time periods that may seem opposites from first glance. This is how a meaningful time period, like the 1970s, influenced parts of society like music, cinema, and education, in society today.
What pops into your mind first when you think of popular culture in today’s day and age? The latest dirt on celebrities or the latest iPhone release? The latest controversial issue or the latest iTunes hit? Regardless, pop culture encompasses all four of these concepts and many more, which consume the world we live in each and every day. Think about education. At first thought, your mind may not make the connection between the newest Taylor Swift song and the highest ACT score, but the linkage between the two becomes undeniable when you dive deeper. Ponder this: each day millions of kids walk into school buildings across the United States, each of them glued to a little slice of pop culture, a.k.a. their phone. And each day these millions
