Each city has played a unique role in shaping France as a fashion mecca. France has been called the world fashion capital for many decades. France’s capital and largest city, Paris is home some of the world’s most elite French fashion houses. The Golden Triangle is a name given to Avenue Champs- Élysées, Avenue Marceau, and Avenue Montaigne, the main districts for luxury shopping in Paris. With issues for many years between the organization and its workers, the introduction of the innovative Jacquard Loom helped the silk industry to slowly rebound. By the 1800s, La Fabrique employed 25% of Lyonnais people. Lyon’s silk industry accounted for 50% of its income, and over 30% of total French exports (Budde, E). In 1831, the silk workers revolted due to their bad working conditions and meager salaries. That revolt is responsible for the steep decrease in the amount of silk shops in Lyon, but today there are still quite a few artisan silk factories there, one is L’Atelier de Soierie, which we visited on our trip. Another reason Lyon holds an important role in French fashion is because of its Croix-Rousse quarter. In its beginning, this was a district of silk workers who used the Jacquard Loom to create intricate designs of silk. Today, it is a government-sponsored neighborhood aimed to help upcoming fashion designers become established. This contributes strongly to how quickly the fashion industry in Lyon is expanding. Marseille is located in the south of France on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It was historically the single most significant trading port of the French Empire. Being France’s largest coastal city, and the third largest city in the entire country, Marseille has had a long history in shaping France’s fashion culture (Ward, R).
