I would incorporate courage, respect, and inspiring as my three core values of being a new leader. The reason why I chose courage is because when I worked as a Correctional Officer you had to have courage to go into a correctional institution and perform your job with the possible of being injured from a prisoner. This takes a lot of trust in other officers to work together to prevent this from happening. According to Manning and Curtis, “courage is not a virtue or value among other personal values like love or fidelity. It is the foundation that underlines and gives reality to all other virtues and personal values” (2008, p. 109). Three leadership characteristics that I value the most are being respectful and being flexible and also open-minded. I believe that in order for someone to be considered to be a leader or to develop the mindset of being a leader then they fist have to be respectful. They have to be able to respect people and understand that there are going to be people who are against them but they have to respect them no matter what the situation may be and that they will gain more respect from the people around them because then they will be considered to be respectful, it is a basic concept of if you respect other then they will respect you. In order for you to get respect they have to give respect to the people they need and people who want to see them fail.

The values that form the basis of your True North are derived from your beliefs and convictions (George, 2015). The values that I live by include being honest, authentic, fair, kind and loyal; functioning as a reference point throughout my life. I utilize such core values in times when the temptations and pressures of the outside world often conspire to pull me away from my True North (George, 2015). In order to ensure that you have something to lean on in times of need, it is imperative to lay a strong groundwork of values. Once the groundwork has been set you must build upon it by identifying your ethical boundaries.
Core values define who people are, what they believe in, and how they live their lives. Many core values shape people. Three to five core values that describe Americans today would be freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equality, diversity, and unity. Freedom of speech has affected advertising because it allows people to display and talk about whatever they want including things that are provocative. An example would be the marketing of KY gel and Viagra on television. Many commercials show couples in bed, and for me, when I was younger, I didn’t see displays as often as I do now. Freedom of speech is being free and open to discuss ideas and issues at any given time (Brodsky & McIlrath, 2001).
When it comes to the Army core values I feel that all of them are equally important when it comes to being a great leader or just a soldiering general. The acronym LDRSHIP is what every soldier should represent and exemplify. It is the core of who we are. If I had to choose one that means the most to me I would say integrity. Without integrity you are nothing. To be able to be a great leader you should be able to always do what is right whether in the eye of someone else or behind closed doors. You should always be able to admit when wrong. Being a leader of integrity is being able to act according to principles and making decisions that are true to the army and one’s moral belief. Honor, Courage, and Commitment are three core values that has changed me to become a better citizen. First of all, I follow the Navy core values, Honor Courage, and Commitment, outside of JROTC. Like; Being honorable, and having respect for others, treating everyone the same, no one is different and making hard decisions through my JROTC life. As a cadet, I learn from my mistakes. I see the world differently from others. I've noticed I always push myself to do better and I've been thinking about my life after high school, and who I want to become. JROTC is just a small step. When I first joined JROTC, I didn't expect such a dramatic change. Oh no, I didn't.
Mars uses the five core values of: Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency, and Freedom to guide company and their strategic compensation and benefits plan. Effective positioning themselves ahead of their competition in today’s competitive global markets. Keeping these core values in mind have allowed them to attract, retain, and motivate their staff around the world. Forrest E. Mars, Sr. first developed this business strategy in 1983 (The Five Principles) to provide and outline benefits mutually to all stakeholders. The strategies on how to realize these values have adapted with time, “We must flexibly adapt to new conditions, while finding ways to remain true to our fundamental beliefs” according to their management team (The Five Principles), but the core values are still the foundation for their success.
I believe the core principles to life is just three things: self-confidence, honesty, and courage. Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities to have in life. In my opinion, if you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything you want to. I first learned this when I started to transition into an incoming freshman during high school. I never believed in myself as being a bright person throughout the early years of high school. Believing in myself was a challenge for me until I matured into a better person with new challenges to endure.
Throughout American history, specifically the period of World War II leading up to the Cold War, the country has had certain core values that they are expected to adhere, often recognized as liberty, equality, and justice. These core values are known as the basic rights that every human being should be guaranteed. Specific moments in the country’s history relating to liberty are the forced internment of Japanese Americans into internment camps, the secret building of the atomic bombs to use on Japan, and the McCarthyism of the 1950s. Moments relating to equality are the exclusion of blacks from the American Dream, voting restrictions in the South before the Civil Rights Movement, and segregation in American schools. Occasions pertaining to justice are the murder of Emmett Till and subsequent acquittal of the men that murdered him, American involvement in the Chinese Civil War, and insufficient payment given to women during World War II. America has, in many cases, failed to adhere to these core values that the country is meant to always stand for.
Drugs, promiscuous sex, birth control, and total happiness are the core values of the World State in the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. In today’s society things like drug use and reckless sex are often seen as taboo, but in World State, these activities are glorified and even considered normal. Aldous Huxley attempts to address to readers the harsh realities and cruel ways of our society in an exaggerated form. His purpose in doing so is to open the eyes of society to what the world might come to if things like technology and humanity get out of hand. In the World State, the motto that people are conditioned to live by is “Community, Identity, and Stability”, all three of which are ironically twisted to encourage members of the society
Integrity: The first and most important trait of a leader. Integrity gives a leader validity to always do the right thing. I have a deeper meaning stemming from my family that makes it crucial that I keep integrity first if I desire others to emulate my actions.
I have three values that I believe are at my core. These three values are; kindness, honesty, and respect. Kindness is one that I do my best to practice everyday. The saying “kill them with kindness” is one that I like to live by. Spreading kindness can do nothing but good. Honesty is truly the best policy. I try to be as honest as I can be in my day to day life and I think that it is important to be honest with the people you interact with. It is not always easy to be honest, but it is better than trying to cover up the truth with lies. Respect is something that I try and use towards everyone that I encounter in my life. The world is such a diverse place full of so many differences but we need to also see the similarities. By respecting everyone we meet, we will be able to work towards a world more accepting of diversity.
Core values are a person or an organization's fundamental beliefs, these principles prescribe behavior along with helping people understand the difference between right and wrong, “values are what motivate you in life. They are what guide you along the path of fulfilment, so essentially your values are the foundation of who you are” (C.Worsley). These values are important to have because they are what shape you, they make every person unique. Having a spirit of adventure, perseverance, and having patience are only some of my core values. Knowing what you cherish is very important and is something many people should revise.
