3 Social Roles

Lifelong learning sector covers adult education (16+) outside universities and takes place in further education colleges, adult and community learning centres, work-bases, libraries, archives and information centres, the forces, NHS, prisons, private colleges. The learners range widely in their ages, interests, abilities, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, etc.

Three social roles that I have adopted for myself are also three roles that are also expected of me, they are the roles of student, caregiver and breadwinner. I adopted the role of student at this point in my life as to to better myself and my family and fulfill my goals. As for the role as caregiver as a mother and a daughter I now have to take care of my ailing mother and my growing children needs. I am the primary breadwinner in my immediate family because I am the one that is able. A social role that that is expected is black trouble maker, it seems odd that I say that but in my neighborhood their only three African American family and the neighbor across the street watch us for any sign of trouble in guise of working on his garage.

Social Role Valorization (SRV) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) complement each other dramatically. The ten themes of SRV and six components of IDEA show many similarities in the goals that each tries to accomplish for students with disabilities. SRV and IDEA do a lot to help students with disabilities; each of these are extremely important to the overall purpose of Special education. There are ten themes that make up SRV. Each theme of SRV is developed around helping students indentify and achieve their goals.

Functionalist suggests that men perform instrumental roles; which is definitely the man of the house who is the breadwinner more or the material support and primary leadership authority within the family; such showing, or telling what needs to be done and how to act for orders to be followed, where the wife, is more likely to provide affection and moral support. It appears that toys play a significant role in molding a child’s identity. It seems that pretend play, including social interaction with other children utilizing the pleasures of toys, can shape and influence characteristics that lined up with what is considered gender appropriate in the Western Culture today. The toy section at the local retail store is actually a reflection of narrative taking place in today’s society. It is a puzzle piece that completes an image involving a description of a script with many characters, yet a limited amount of roles.

Throughout history, the ideologies of male and female roles in marriage have changed drastically. Spanning all the way from the 1800’s when a woman’s task was to never leave her kitchen right up until today’s modern society where women are more liberated than ever before, finally able to break free from the chains and shackles placed upon them decades ago. Within a marriage, there are a significant number of tasks which must be carried out for it to run smoothly. As such both spouses must provide not only an intellectual and physical function for the partnership, for example, the ability to manage housework, but also an emotional function so that the marriage does not end up becoming anything more than a basic living agreement. Social Roles refer to expectations, behaviors, and responsibilities that we adapt to in certain situations. With each role we adopt, our behavior changes to fit the expectations. They are unwritten on how we as a society must behave.

The area I choice to look at was the same area that I work in. I work at the Piazza cafeteria as a Student Supervisor at the Piazza, so I have a view of the area that most others do not get to have. One thing is very obvious though. There are multiple norms throughout the Piazza. The one that I noticed right away is one that others can point out pretty easily as well.

From the day that we are born our gender is influenced to partake in certain gender roles depending on our sex. One’s sex is distinguished by biological characteristics that set us apart, while our gender “consists of whatever behaviors and attitudes a group considers proper for its males and females” (Henslin 292). Males are influenced to partake on more aggressive roles to show power and dominance, whereas, female are influenced to partake on more nurturing and subservient roles. However, if one fails to do so they are labeled a feminist “not masculine/feminine enough” or gay/lesbian.

Social psychology, as defined by the Microsoft Bookshelf, is the branch of human psychology that deals with the behavior of groups and the influence of social factors on the individual. Social roles are one of the many sub - categories of social psychology. I believe social roles to be the way we, as individuals, act in certain situations; such as home life, educational and economic statue, peer groups, etc. The Prison Simulation by Haney, Banks & Zimbardo is just one of the vast studies in this area. In this study we will see how people take roles in life, and in simulated life situations. Context matters. Research demonstrating racioethnic differences in the impact of primary social roles clearly shows that an important set of role features coalesce for individual role actors. These factors include role meaning, role use, and role sequencing. As presented in the social roles literature, these role characteristics operate collectively as individuals enter into the domain of paid work or make a decision to start their own families through marriage and/or parenthood. The enactment of a social role initiates a process whereby actors assign meaning to their role behaviors, determine how they wish to utilize the resources attached to newly-acquired social roles, and make entre’ into primary social roles in some sequential order.

Everybody in the world belongs to a subcultural group (people that come together that seek out others sharing similar ideas or views) or plays a social role in it. Playing in a social role, as individuals, we act in certain situations differently, such as in a work place, home, or around your peer groups. I believe it’s a real occurrence that a lot of people deal with daily. The ideology of a subculture group or the social roles you play forms by separating or belonging in it and forming personal norms, sanctions, material objects, symbols, language patterns, and social institutions. Such as me being an employee (sales associate) at Payless and being a younger sister to an older brother which have similar ways but they also have a few differences.

Diversity is about recognising that Everyone is different in a variety of ways. It is about creating a culture and practices that recognise, respect and value difference. It is about Harnessing this Potential to create a productive environment.

Because of my passion for healthcare, I have numerous social roles relating to the field. Most importantly, I have a social role of being a pre-medical undergraduate student at Loyola University Chicago, a university which is known for their pre-professional health care programs. As a student, I have a social script of educating myself in order to obtain a beneficial career in the future. Through the help of the professors, teacher’s assistants, classmates, and tutoring sessions that are present at Loyola, I am able to fulfill my social script of providing myself a sturdy foundation into the medical field. Through these “trainings,” I know how to work hard in order to achieve success in my prerequisite classes for medical school. By the social scripts presented to me by the Loyola staff, I make sure that my education is my top priority.
