If after the original 36 month time period has ended and assistance is still needed, the recipient must contact the local county Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS) to request either a state or federal hardship or good cause extension approval. Both the state and federal hardship extension allows the recipient to continue to receive the benefit after the original 36 month time period had ended up to the 60 month federal time limit. A good cause extension allows the recipient to receive the benefit 24 months following the end of the original 36 month time period. There is no set standard criteria in place for the hardship and good cause extension, leaving the criteria up to each county DJFS to determine. There are 88 counties in Ohio,
