3G technology is considered the “third generation” in mobile technology and has provided services to cell phone users for over 10 years. 3G ushered in the smartphone era enabling users to check e-mail, text, call and take advantage of streaming data on their devices. “The transfer rate for 3G networks is between 128 and 144 kbps (kilobits per second) for devices that are moving fast and 384 kbps for slow ones (like for pedestrians). For fixed wireless LANs, the speed goes beyond 2 Mbps.” 1

The explosion of social media, music and video streaming as well as video chatting and calling has place skyrocketing demands on the mobile networks. Utilizing an integration of wireless LAN and a Wide area network architecture, the 4G technology is able to accommodate the enormous needs of millions of smartphone users.
4G is the best standard to coexist with the computer processing capabilities smartphones currently possess. Customers have become data hungry and their consumption seems to stem from the 4G carriers claims of more performance and speed. However, the larger carriers, AT&T and Verizon have moved away from “unlimited data” plans which throws some caution toward customers. Streaming movies and playing games on their new IPhones and Android devices can consume their data plans at a more rapid rate than once thought.

4G LTE and 4GWiMAX are similar network standards that share the 2.1 GHz and 2.5 GHz frequencies but the LTE also uses the 700 MHz while the WiMAX can utilize both the 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequencies. Between the two standards, LTE is more compatible with existing network architecture. “LTE and WiMAX are both capable of working with new and existing broadband and mobile deployments. At the same time, LTE is meant to work with existing systems and tends to be better at integrating existing networks.
