The concept I found most valuable to me is the 5 Essential Qualities of Effective Followership. I find this most valuable because it will help me become the effective leader I want to be. In order for me to reach that goal, I need to develop my followership qualities.
According to Course 15 the 5 Essential Qualities of Effective Followership is self-management, committed, competent, integrity and initiative. Of the five listed I feel that I fall short with the committed and initiative traits. I feel that my self-management and competence level is on track, and will develop more as I grow in the other qualities. Integrity is a trait that was instilled in me since I was a young boy, and I take pride in my honesty. With this said, I will focus
Listening, 2. Determination, 3. Goal setting, 4. Management and leadership of people, 5. Ability to get along with diverse groups (Bethel University, 2014). I think that Number 1 is one of my better qualities, I truly like to learn and I also like to help others and the best way to do that is to listen to what is being said. My Dad use to say, “you can’t learn anything if you are talking, you have to remain quiet and listen” (W.A. Buckner, np, no #). Number 2, has never been an issue for me, I have been and always will be determined to better myself and hopefully others. Number 3, is one thing that I have done my entire life and work diligently to achieve any goal I set for myself. Number 4, I have been to many leadership schools in the Army as well as supervisor schools within law enforcement and think that I have a good grasp of what is necessary to be an effective leader, which I personally believe is more important than just being a manager. Leaders set the example and will work alongside their subordinates to accomplish a task, whereas a manager will merely direct others to complete the task. Lastly number 5, again goes back to my life experience within the military and law enforcement, which hones ones skills to effectively work with all nationalities and races for the betterment of
2. Followership should be viewed as an active skill that must be developed in order to be considered an effective follower. According to the Air and Space Power Journal (Winter 2004), followership is considered a discipline that when viewed from a professional perspective is considered both an art and a science, requiring a balance between the development of skills and the understanding of followership roles within a professional
One quality that was highly emphasized throughout the book was the attribute of servant leadership. A servant leader is “the highest expression of the human spirit” (Fisher & Martini , 2004, p. 151) emphasizing on the empowerment of followers to accomplish organizational goals (Lussier & Achua, 2013, p. 345). Ultimately, a servant leader places the needs of others ahead of their own displaying empathy, kindness, honesty, humility and respect for others. Offering methods in becoming a servant leader, Fisher and Martini recommend the imitation of great leaders from the past (Fisher & Martini, 2004, p. 143). An exemplary model for servant leadership is Jesus Christ sense He defined leadership in Matthew 20:26-28, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first
There are many differences, as well as similarities, between followership and servant leadership. Without followers, there are no leaders, and vice versa. Without the relationship of followers and leaders, there is no structure in an organization. “Followership is just as important as leadership. Followers are the backbone of any effective organization because without loyal, dedicated followers there can be no effective leaders” (Marine Corps Warfighting Publication 6-11. Leading Marines).
Family, communications, dependability, honesty, and loyalty are the personal values that are the biggest drivers of my leadership philosophy. I have 3
Overall, this assessment reveals both strengths and weaknesses from which I can learn and improve my effectiveness as a follower. From Kelley’s questionnaire, it can be seen that my strengths are commitment, enthusiasm for what I do, ability to make myself valuable, and understanding my leaders’ needs and desires. Conversely, my weaknesses in following can be summed up in a lack of initiative--a lack of initiative in bringing new ideas to the table, asking questions to gain a better understanding, and challenging other’s thinking when
Leadership has been emphasized throughout CSU Global’s Masters of Healthcare Administration degree in a number of ways. Some examples of leadership characteristics and techniques studied so far include leadership theory, conflict and negotiation tactics, methods of decision making, strategic planning, and globalization. Each of these dimensions possesses critical components for effective leadership and organizational success. Also of great importance is the notion a leader can only provide direction if someone or a group of people will follow. Therefore, both the leadership role and the followership role play crucial parts in organizational operations. Perhaps a good way to further define these roles is by understanding the mechanics of teamwork.
As a good follower, I need to accept responsibility and I need to be aware of the tasks that I have to take on. I have to readily support my leader at all times and I should be able to voice my opinions to my leader in a very supportive way. Leaders can only lead an organization successfully if they have personalities that appeal to their followers. The individual reflection and big five
2.Be Empathic - Do people believe that you will understand what is happening in their lives and how it affects them? Servant leaders can "walk in others' shoes" and recognize the unique value of each employee. They understand and empathize with others' circumstances and problems. Leaders who are empathetic have earned confidence from others by understanding whatever situation is being faced. This characteristic is a skill that comes more naturally to some than others, but it is pertinent for all who aspire to be a servant leader.
2. To be an effective leader, leaders must exhibit expertise, build trust with their subordinates and continually develop those subordinates. These three leadership traits create a positive work environment, which ensures soldiers “buy-in” to the leader’s vision. Thus, allowing the organization to be effectively and efficiently controlled . The subsequent paragraphs will clarify the importance of each leadership trait.
2)Based on the followership power scores, I found that I had high scores in independent thinking and active engagement. I have an effective followership style. This information will help me by behaving the same towards everyone regardless of their positions. Also, I will have the courage to take the risk and initiate change to serve the best interest of my company.
This shows people that I care, if they do not think that I care then it is hard to get them to buy in. The second characteristic I want to be remembered for is honesty. The more open and truthful I am the easier it is for the people around me to trust me. When subordinates trust you they are more willing to come to you with their problems.
Integrity: The first and most important trait of a leader. Integrity gives a leader validity to always do the right thing. I have a deeper meaning stemming from my family that makes it crucial that I keep integrity first if I desire others to emulate my actions.
There are two kinds of people in this world, Followers, and leaders. Followers are the people who never take a leadership role in any activity. However, leaders are the ones that use their leadership skills to make a difference in this world, Only one out of many can truly play the role of being a leader. Though there are a lot of people who try, very few are successful in leadership. Leadership is not something you can learn from a book, but you have to gain this skill through experiences such as holding an office, organizing an event, or speaking in front of a crowd. For me, leadership means being able to put myself in challenging situations to achieve my goals, and, at the same time, inspire and motivate those involved in the same mission as I am. Leadership is also a clear understanding of one's destination, knowing where one is now, and taking the step in the right direction. Many factors can cause people to criticize your leadership, therefore one must be fair towards the people who they lead. Personally, I had to learn the hard way, being in a male-dominated country as Libya made me push myself harder to get
Effective followership is an essential component of effective leadership in that, without good followers, the leader’s work is difficult and cumbersome. The role of the follower is many times understated. As illustrated by Kelley (1998), “effective followers are thinkers; energetic and assertive, self-starters, independent problem solvers, and carry out their tasks with these characteristics (p. 143). Effective followers also are characterized by their ability to perform tasks with little supervision, their intelligence, and ability to think for themselves. We are all followers, even those who consider themselves leaders; so to encourage this effectiveness in others; we must be role models for those under us, so that they may also be effective at following. Chaleff (2009) observed that “all important social accomplishments require complex
