This leads to our rights and responsibilities as people because we the people in a country, cannot afford to shut our eyes and follow unconsciously, we must carry the courage to question even the most stern of rules if we discover they are crippling us and hindering our growth as an individual because strong individuals make up a strong nation. It is not a cliche to say that change starts with one person, one individual is enough to spark a trail of an amendment. Betty Friedan said every woman was afraid to even ask her self the silent question because the norms of society told them otherwise and they were forced to believe they’re own gut feelings were unsuitable for society because life was indeed perfect and well-established according to the social standards of the time. We as human tailor ourselves to fit our environments even if it is not in line with our deeper desires and we do this unconsciously when resistance breaks and it starts to peek into our consciousness is when we realize, something is not right. Look at relationships with between humans for instance, in many cases an individual will experience inner feelings hinting that this relationship is not to their benefit, it is not balanced, but that individual quickly ignores those conscious feelings because unconsciously they fear change and will continue to reason themselves to stay committed. This was perhaps the case with women in the 60’s, the only image they were familiar with was pure feminism, tieing her life around men and children. “This mystique of feminine fulfillment became the cherished and self-perpetuating core of contemporary American culture.” How many young individuals can view modern American culture in this fashion today or to reverse the question, how many women would have imagined the modern
