Liz Addison, the author of “Two Years Are Better than Four,” started with a question on the importance of college. She wrote this essay in response to Perlstein’s piece, “What’s the Matter With College.” Addison argued that college is important while Perlstein thought differently. Starting with how the beginning of the college process starts, Addison states that for any one person, that the idea of a community college is for one to begin their journey (Addison, 256). This I would agree with because attending a four-year college during the start of the college journey, I have found myself lost with no idea on how to begin. Therefore, transferring to a community college, finally realizing that a community college is where I should have begun.

In high school, students have the tendency to think that community college is something that is bad. In “Confessions Of A Girl Who Was ‘Too Smart For Community College’,” Chelsea Fagan talks about how in school, she had a hard time in school with her grades and how her school showed off kids that went to college on a bulletin board. She tried everything to avoid going to a community college. Only for the reason that there was a “stigma” on how community colleges are mostly frowned upon or even laughed at (Fagan). Being rejected from many colleges she then convinced herself that she was too smart to go to a community college. Later on she reluctantly went to community college expecting it to be terrible. She quickly realized that community college was a great place to be. Later on, this gave her opening to go to other places. She closes off with her stating how community college is a great place financially and also a great place to mature. In “Confessions Of A Girl Who Was ‘Too Smart For Community College,’” Chelsea Fagan’s simple structure and casual tone make it easy for a reader to understand her main point, and I agree with her concerns on the reproach of community college, but she never really explained why community college was great other than her thoughts on it being cheaper making her argument a little weak.

Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle in their book “Rereading America” feel that commencing college is a very disturbing experience. So many things we have to deal while starting college, but the major challenges are expanded difficulty levels and higher expectation which we are not familiar over the years of high school. In order to solve this issue, we have to remodel ourselves by taking up the challenge and rethink about our strength and flaws. To succeed in college we need to be mentally strong and dedicated towards our goal.

Do you ever think that community college is similar to high school? Do you feel community college is easier than high school? Does it seems to you that it won’t be any rules to adhere to? Students used to come to a community college after they finished their high school without knowing anything about college’s life; it has rules and regulations that should be looking for before starting it. Also, there are lots of things that students don’t know about them in the community college; especially in their first year.

Many of my surrounding opinions established a base comprehension of the fact that most students’ experiences during the first year in a county college indirectly influences their future view of how they’ll succeed. This tend to either motivate or decline their determination of procceding with their education. This idea drastically build a fear in me as i noticed that my first year will determine my motivational aspect in education. Union County college and it’s outstanding services broke down those fears in relation to the fact that i did not have to struggle that hard to reach my goals.

Unlike high school, people don’t normally get one try to get it right the first time! College, for most is a critical development into adulthood. College teaches beyond the classroom and sheds light on certain attainable humanly characteristics. Such as: perseverance, hard work, integrity, love, admiration, and respect which allows one to find oneself using knowledge.

I'm attending El Paso Community College to start off my education. My ambition is to be the first one in my family to be a college graduate. Gain a level of independence, there is still much for me to learn not only in school but in the real world as well. Community College will allow me to complete a degree in a giving environment well also beneficially not costing too much. Thanks to Advanced Placement and Dual credit courses, I have completed some of the requirements needed for my degree. Therefore, I wish to transfer to a bigger university so that I may have an opportunity in my majoring field. I'm not a native El Pasoen however it has become another place I call home. Although I wish to experience more of a diversity in other cities.

Throughout my five semesters at Delaware County Community College I have grown beyond all expectations. I never anticipated to become as involved as I did within the Delaware County Community College Community, but because of that I have been blessed with many opportunities that have shaped me into the person I am today. I aim to be as involved within the Neumann Community as I was in the Delaware County Community to not only better myself but to better the college itself. I hope to make an impact as best I can not only through my involvement in extracurricular clubs and activities, but also in the classroom with my fellow classmates.

That is how adults handle interactions, and to react defensively, I feel, is mostly a reaction based in fear.

Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.

The first reason for attending a community college is enhanced academic quality. In fact, nowadays community colleges have greatly raised academic standards with the intent of suiting all the students’ needs. In fact, if someone is serious with understanding what is offered in community colleges nowadays, there is no doubt that one leaves the institution with the required skills for approaching life.

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the altered missions of community colleges and related impacts on the historical mission of community colleges.
