A Far Out Decade Everyone loved the 70’s. It was better than the 60’s. And even better than the 50’s. In fact, the 1970’s put those decades to shame when it sauntered in with its bell bottomed pants, comfortable cotton shirts, and sparkly jumpsuits. People wore large gold chains, vibrant and wild colored prints, and snazzy platform heels as they casually strolled into town. Music genres in the 70’s were quite varied- with rock, hard rock, heavy metal, soft rock, southern rock, country pop, and disco all gaining popularity. The choice pet of the time was the classic pet rock. While the 70’s had many memorable moments throughout its time period there are five events that are particularly important. Frank Willis- the security guard at the Watergate Hotel alerted police to the break-in. While investigating, the FBI found a link to Nixon. Evidence began accumulating against Nixon when former staff members testified against him. Although he denied it, it was known that Nixon had been recording many conversations in his offices. The first crew of Skylab spent 28 days in space and consisted of Joe Kerwin, Pete Conrad, and Paul Weitz. A total of three crews lived aboard the space station. The third crew spent the longest time there; 84 days which was a new record. After six years of orbit, Skylab re-entered the atmosphere due to high solar activity and its decaying orbit. It disintegrated and left debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia. Gene Splicing The first recombinant DNA created Herb Boyer and Stanley Cohen; they took a gene from African clawed toad Xenopus and put it into bacterial DNA. Gene splicing gained prominence in 1973 due to this event. The reason genetic recombination is possible is because DNA molecules from all organisms have the same chemical structure. In order to attain the desired molecule restriction enzymes are used to chemically cut the DNA. Boyer and Cohen’s success led to gene splicing being used to cure or eliminate diseases and create glowing bunny rabbits. Iran Hostage
Among them would be Bob Bernstein, and Carl Woodward, reporters for The Washington Post. They used a background source “Deep Throat” to uncover the relationship between the scandal and the White House. “Deep Throat” later announced was W.Mark Felt. The Senate makes a special committee that nominated Archibald Cox to head the special investigations. James D St. Clair was appointed to be Nixon’s defense counsel. Startling information shocked the nation. There was a check of $25000 in one of the burglar’s bank account. Archibald then learns that Nixon taped all his conversations in the white house. Archibald demanded tapes but Nixon denied. Archibald was getting close to uncovering the case so Nixon demanded him to be fired. He demanded Attorney General Richardson but he protested and resigned. Next in line was Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus who also protested and resigned. Finally, Solicitor General Robert Bork carried out orders. John Sirica, a judge and he also realized not all the pieces of the puzzle were put together.
As time progressed and the investigation began to uncover the truth about what transpired at the Watergate apartment complex several things became evident: most of the burglars were ex-CIA and ex-FBI personnel, the burglars were paid with money directly from the re-election campaign and President Nixon not only knew about and sanctioned the break-in but deliberately attempted to cover it up. When called before Congress to testify about his knowledge, White House staffer John Dean testified that Nixon and his aides attempted to “stonewall” the investigation. As Congress continued its inquiry, it became clear
After the break-in, Nixon needed to protect his image so that American’s could still trust him. To accomplish this, he let a number of employees take the blame for him. The Watergate Seven were a group of men involved in the scandal, who were also advisors and aides to President Nixon. On January 8, 1973, these men were put to trial. With urges from Nixon, five of the seven pleaded guilty. Then on January 30, 1973, six of Nixon’s aides and the lawyer for his re-election committee were charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to cover-up the break in. This included John Mitchell, Harry Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, Charles W. Colson, Gordon Strachan, and Kenneth Wells Parkinson. However, after the trial, CIA operative, James W. McCord, wrote a letter to Judge John Sirica. In which he claimed that the defendants had pleaded guilty under duress. He also said that they committed perjury and that others were involved in the Watergate break-in. Leading to further pressure being put on Nixon and his alleged involvement in the break-in. Eventually, Nixon’s deceitful involvement would be revealed to the American public.
Living in the 70s was in the midst of a unique culture. Theatres in the 1970s were very popular as various people rushed to theaters to watch plays and movies. This was also the era in which many owned bizarre items such as pet rocks, mood rings, bean bag chairs, and more. “Have a nice day!” became a slogan that earmarked the 70’s,and was almost always accompanied with the notorious smiley face icon. Sickening sweet happy faces were plastered everywhere; they were spray painted on the side of buildings and even worn on bandanas and t-shirts. Another distinct culture featured in the 70’s was the fashion. Fashion fads in the 70’s took off like rockets. Clothing styles such as shirts with colorful geometric shapes and bell-bottoms emerged. The rise of disco also played a big role during this time. In contrast to males in today’s society, some men in the 1970’s wore shoes with giant heels. Culture proved to play a big role in the 70’s and profoundly affected the civilization’s view upon The American Dream.
During the years between 1915 and 1970, some six million black southerners left their homelands in the South to move to the northern and western states looking for a better life.( The Reason why this i so significant to me is during this time period the great moving from one place to another was in effect and during this time period 6 million African Americans from the away from cities South to the cities of the North, Midwest and West from 1916 to 1970, affected a lot city based life in the United States. Driven from their homes by unsatisfactory money based opportunities and marsh separating people by race, religion, etc.ist laws, many blacks headed north, where they took advantage of the need for industrial workers that first rose up during
The 70s was groovy and funky all around. The Beatles broke up, M.A.S.H. Started, and abortion was legalized. Everyone talks about watergate or the palestinians, but no one seems to recognize the amazing advancements brought about in technology. In the 1970s technology was greatly advanced by the invention of the floppy disk and the VCR.
Afraiding the report would damage Nixon’s credibility, because it revealed that the government was lying to its people about the US troop populations in Vietnam, the Plumbers broke into the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg with the attempt of finding embarrassing documents that would discredit Daniel. They failed, however, and Daniel was exonerated from all of the charges after the break in was uncovered. The Watergate Burglary was also a mission given to the Plumbers to monitor the democratic party. However, in the morning of June 17, 1972, the Plumbers were caught inside the Watergate complex, and their address books showed that they are connected to the White House. There is no direct evidences that Nixon had ordered the Watergate burglary, but what he had done subsequently was just as despicable.
The Watergate Scandal was truly the biggest political scandal in United States History. Over forty people where charged with crimes relating to the scandal. Bernstein and Woodward were given a fantastic oppourtunity to uncover something truly significant in history. The twenty-one months of investigative reporting done by these two men would ruin Nixon’s name and make these two common everyday reporters lives change forever. Woodward first got his life changing call on June 17th 1972 with his editor telling him about a small invasion of the Democratic Party Headquarters. With being related to the scandal, two members of President Nixon’s cabinet, H.R. Hadlemen and John Ehrlichman, quickly resigned. When first thought of the president even having something to do with the Watergate Scandal, he made every effort to possibly hide this career ruining event. The break in was first found by a security guard by the name of, Frank Wills. Wills saw a piece of tape covering a broken lock. Wills was
James McCord later admitted in his testimony that they had not acted alone in the Watergate burglary and he implicated the white house. Then it was revealed by a former White House Aide, Alexander Butterfield, that there were listening devices in the white house that recorded conversations the president had on tapes. The tapes could be used to prove or disprove James McCord’s testimony so the Watergate committee subpoenas the tapes. Nixon refused to comply and handover the tapes. The prosecutor on the case, Archibald Cox requested and demanded the tapes, but Nixon refuses to comply. Nixon then orders the attorney general, Elliot Richardson, to fire Cox and he refuses. Nixon fires Cox and Richardson resigns because of the president’s actions. Then Nixon fires Richardson’s Deputy William Ruckelshaus for refusing to fire Cox when he ordered him to. As ordered by the President, a half hour after FBI sealed off the offices of the individuals that were fired. Nixon’s actions stirred up controversy and caused the public to want to impeach him. At his impeachment trial Nixon awas once again subpoenaed to
There are many facts about the Watergate affair that readers should know. The first of many is that in 1972 there were five burglars who were found in the Democratic National Committee headquarters. These burglars were later indicted on wiretapping and sentenced to prison. Following the break-in two of Nixon's closest advisors resigned because of their ties to the
On July 12th, 1972, 5 men were arrested at the Watergate Hotel, supposedly trying to bug the Democratic National Committees meetings. It was soon discovered that someone from the White House was a part of this scandal. It was discovered that some of the people trying to bug the meetings were members of President Nixon's re-election party. This gave investigators a reason to suspect Nixon as a part of the scandal and that he has probably done more to make him at the top. Nixon had straight up denied any evidence that was geared toward him being a part of the scandal. An investigation was instituted to try to find evidence of burglary in the White House and at the Hotel. It was discovered that some of the top people in Nixon’s political campaigns
Ehrlichman was ordered to destroy incriminating documents and tapes. Then L. Patrick Gray resigned as acting director of the FBI, later admitting he had destroyed documents given to him by Ehrlichman and Dean. On June 23, 1972, Nixon learned about Mitchell's possible link with the operation, and Nixon instructed the FBI to stop the inquiry into the source of money used by the men who tapped the building. He said that "the investigation would endanger the CIA operations." Dean and the others subsequently sought to induce CIA officials to cooperate with this plan. On July 1, Mitchell left the CRP, citing personal reasons. On August 29, Nixon declared that no one in the administration, then employed, was involved in the Watergate. Although money found in the possession of the wire tappers was traced to the CRP, such evidence was insufficient to implicate high officials. On September 15, only the five men first arrested, plus Liddy and E. Howard Hunt , one of the plumbers, were indicted (Carson 2).
