As I am not currently working, for the purposes of this assignment I am going to reflect upon an 8-week term I did in conjunction with an adult literacy centre. My job there was to conduct weekly health-living workshops for senior citizens. The curriculum was established and sample handouts and exercises were provided, but I had the option to modify these materials, as I saw fit. Topics ranged from nutrition and active living to fall prevention and even end of life planning. This program was developed out of a need demonstrated by low health status and literacy levels among local seniors. Many of the classes I conducted myself, but I also had guest speakers including pharmacists and home-health nurses. I promoted learning in these sessions by presenting prepared lectures, having discussions, reviewing and reading handouts out loud and playing …show more content…
Generally, I measured these objectives again by the feedback given to me and the questions the group asked. I reported to the executive director weekly on the group’s progress and areas for improvement for both the group and the curriculum. Personally, I hoped that the classes would do more than just improve literacy for the group and that the members would put some of the ideas and techniques we covered into practice. This was not something I consciously looked for, but it retrospect, I could see evidence of this in the conversations we had prior to the formal workshop starting and on lunch break where, for example, a member shared that she called a friend to go for a walk after one class and another had asked for an ingredient list and nutrition information for the muffins she was purchasing. Although these were modest efforts, I found it was encouraging that the information I was presenting was being
I believe that I am proficient in establishing a classroom setting that calls upon the students to learn in an individual and collaborative manner. I believe that I have sufficiently encouraged positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation. I have shown this in learning activities that have been presented to the students. An example of this would be with the placard assignment, which had the students fill out a sheet that corresponded to four maps to help them figure out what artifacts certain cultural regions would use. During this learning segment, students would have to be self directed after the directions were given, the students would have to use collaborative skills, and they were all engaged during
Why Mary Surratt should not have been executed Mary Surratt should not have been executed. Mary Surratt could have helped a little bit but not enough she should have been executed. One reason Mary Surratt is innocent is because she didn’t know they were going to kill Lincoln. In source 2 it says “It is possible the Mary knew of the kidnapping but not the plan to kill Lincoln.” This means she might not have known the were planning to kill Lincoln so she could be innocent.
I am concern about Krista Cain’s ability to complete the COS 121 5H01 class successfully. I reported she did not have a workbook, which was required for the course; however, she stated that she had purchased an electronic copy of the workbook. I gave all the students a copy of the first chapter, including her with the understanding that they had to have all their supplies by the September 11 to continue in the program. I made Krista a copy of the next chapter workbook; however, she did not turn in the assignment. There has been three tests given and her grades are as following: 84, 79, 76. I give the students time during class to complete all their assignments; therefore, I do not assign them any homework. They receive
There are many reasons that settler move to change their lives for the better and participate in different opportunities for trade. The motive for the individuals that of the Plymouth colony was to leave Europe for religious freedom and for opportunities of a better life.
Interviewing John gave me a better understanding with our older generation, and the struggles they faced throughout their lives. The purpose of this paper was to gain a better knowledge about our elder’s health, lifestyle, and many challenges they have encountered.
What I learned in the documentary called “The First Year” is the aspects of each teacher’s way they deal a classroom with students as first-timers. Especially when coming across to many challenges and the struggle they had during their first time ever as educators. Watching what lengths they will go to for the benefit of the students is admirable. The teachers who are into five separate schools in the Los Angeles area are known to be George Acosta who teaches English as a second language, Joy Kraft-Watts teaches high school history, Genevieve Debose teaches middle school language arts and social studies, Maurice Rabb teaches kindergarten, Nate Monley teaches fifth-grade bilingual education, and Andrew Glass teaches elementary special education.
Health literacy has been demarcated as the measurement of the individual’s capacity to obtain, understand and process simple health information. It is needed to make satisfactory health decisions and determine services needed to treat or prevent illness. Health literacy requires knowledge from many topics, comprising the patient’s own body, appropriate conducts towards healthy results and the difficulties to understand the health system. It is influenced by many conditions such as our communication skills, age, socio-economic status, and cultural background, past experiences, educational level and mental health status (U.S. Department of
Health promotion brochure should be written at an appropriate grade level for the consumer to understand. According to Helmig (2006) The familiar brochures, tent-cards, checklists, posters, and newsletter, and mainstays of physicians’ offices and waiting rooms serve as important resources for patients, but they often do not speak to patients in a language they can understand ( p 82). The readability of this brochure according to SMOG is at a 10th grade level. Research shows that more than 20% of adults read below the fifth grade level. Examples in the brochure that would be difficult for the consumer to understand is under the heading “About your Diabetes.” This information is confusing and need more clarification to help the consumer understand and interpret the information that is given. According to Safeer & Keenan (2005), health literacy is basic reading that allows a person to function in the health care environment. The authors’ also stated elderly consumers are predominantly affected because of their reading and comprehension abilities are influenced by their vision and hearing status (p. 463).

As I read Genesis chapter 1-3, I was able to learn that God created the heavens and the earth in only six days and the seventh day God rested. He created man and his helper women with the idea for them to live in the garden of Eden with no worries. They would have all of the food they needed to eat provided for them by God. there was only one condition, they were not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The serpent was a tricky creature and he convinced the Eve to eat from the forbidden tree. After Eve ate from the tree she convinced Adam to eat from it as well. Once they ate from the tree, the knew that they were naked. And this is what brought sin into the world.
Health literacy has been a problem with our patients. The most vulnerable populations are the elderly, people with low-income levels, those with limited education, non-native speakers of English, those with chronic mental and physical health conditions, minority, and immigrant populations. Nurses have a great role in helping our patients succeed in understanding their health conditions. Nurses can be of great help in promoting health literacy. Sykes, Wills, Rowlands and Popple (2013) defined health literacy as the ability of individuals to access, understand, appraise, and apply health information. The three domains of health literacy, according to Bennett and Perkins (2012) as adapted from the (WHO) (1998) are functional health literacy, interactive literacy, and critical health literacy. Functional health literacy is basic reading and writing skills to be able to function effectively in a health context. Interactive health literacy is the used of more advanced cognitive and literacy skills to participate in health care. Critical health literacy is the ability to analyze critically and to use information to participate in action, to overcome structural barriers to health (p.14). The U.S. Department of Education published the findings of the National Assessment of Adult Literacy conducted in 2003. The result showed that 36 % of adults have basic or below-basic skills for dealing with health material, 52 %
The elderly population in the community has some areas that they need to overcome to be a successful learner. The limitations of the teaching and learning identified the following barriers.
The problems associated with the health literacy have been identified by the researchers in the last ten years. They came to know the role played by it in the medical as well as the individual self care by the comprehension of information related to health and the outcomes related to it (Carolyn Speros, 2004).
Health literacy is both a consumer and public healthcare issue. As a health care provider, it is not only my responsibility to ensure that you understand your health and what is going on
As the semester started, I had set my mind that I was destined to achieve a lot. During the start of the semester, I had several difficulties writing English assignments especially in terms of grammar. During the first week of the semester, I sat down, organized my thoughts and comprehended that throughout the semester, I had to achieve all that I had planned for. As a student of English, I had planned that throughout the semester, I had to improve my skills as a scholar, writer and critical thinker. Now that the semester has ended, I can reflect all the semester activities to depict how my writing skills and critical thinking skills have drastically improved. This paper presents a reflection paper of how this
