The 80’s was definitely one of the most iconic periods of time. From epochal artists to fashion, it is remembered as a decade for expressing oneself. Conveying personality for all genders can also take form by the usage of makeup. Back during this time, cosmetics were taking a huge turn from the 60’s, with their pastel colors (“Women’s 1960s Makeup: An Overview”), and then from the 70’s, with a total ‘all or nothing’ look (“Women’s 1970s Makeup: An Overview”). The 80’s was a time for bright, unrestrained color. Bright blue eyeshadow and drawn on beauty marks were staples of the decade (Jordan). Fast forward around thirty years, and now makeup is still bright, but much more refined and applied in a more exact fashion. Just like today, people back then wore long streaks of eyeliner that winged out at the corner of eyes. The same thing happened with eyebrows. In the 80’s, many women would leave them to be natural and fairly large. Now, eyebrows are expected to be shaped; many people have drifted away from unnaturally thin brows (Denning). Yellow and purple eyeshadow have made a comeback as well. Although they aren’t paired with any unnatural colors, and the yellow has turned into a golden color, they still pay homage to the 80’s. Bright, neon colors are used, but they are more polished, and concentrated into small areas (Luiza). Men wearing makeup has also been integrated into today’s society from the 80’s. Bands like Motley Crue and Poison were big in the 80’s, and wore very heavy makeup. This really pushed gender normalities at the time, and has ultimately made it more acceptable for men in the performing arts to wear makeup
