As millions were watching the events unfold in New York, American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., and crashed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. Jet fuel from the Boeing 757 caused a overwhelming firestorm that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the enormous concrete building. All told, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) It was initially thought that this plane was bound for the White House or the Capitol Building; however, because of lack of visibility coming from the west as it did objects obscured these targets making the terrorists change their plans and crash into the Pentagon. On September 11, 2001, nineteen members of Al Qaeda took control of four planes. Two of these planes hit the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon while the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This day is now known as 9/11. (Smith, “What Happened on 9/11”). Two thousand, seven hundred fifty-three people were killed at the World Trade Center attacks. One hundred eighty-four people were killed at the Pentagon. On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the United State. The terrorists hijacked 4 airplanes in the middle of the flight. They fly 2 of the planes into 2 skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. These caused the buildings to catch fire and collapsed. Another plane destroyed a part of the Pentagon, which is the U.S. military headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Investigation officials think that the terrorists on the plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. However, passengers on the plane fight with the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. Overall, 2996 people were being killed in the September 11 attacks and caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damaged.

The attack on September 11, caused a lot of panic and worry about terrorism, pushing this into action. After the plane crashes of September 11, a lot of Americans were afraid. They thought that some attacks might/could occur in their country at any time. Following the 9/11 attacks, another wave of attacks hit. Letters containing anthrax spores were sent to people in the news, and to members of Congress in D.C. When you inhale the anthrax it can damage your lungs, and cause death.

This extreme Islamic group assaulted several landmarks in New York City, Washington D.C, and the state of Pennsylvania. In New York City, two airliner jets were hijacked with passengers aboard and slammed into the World Trade Center. “The next attack resulted in a plane colliding into the Pentagon, government building; the last attack was in Pennsylvania when a plane crashed into a field. In total, 3,000 people died on September 11th, 2001” (History.com Staff). The September 11th-attacks have affected airport security by the new training of flight attendants, the formation of the Transportation Security Administration and new technical advances to keep up with increased terror threats.

People were killed within three different situations on that day; when the hijackers crashed into each tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, when a plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C, and when a plane flew into a field in Shanksville, PA. Over 3,000 people were killed during all the attacks, including more than 400 police officers and rescue workers. Only six people in the World Trade Center survived and there were over 10,000 people injured (National September 11 Memorial & Museum).

On September 11, 2001, multiple airplanes were hijacked by 19 militants linked with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda, against buildings and landmarks in the United States. The terrorist’s boarded four aircrafts at three East Coast airports, and soon after takeoff, they were able to successfully hinder the crews. The hijackers then took control of the aircraft, all “large and bound” for areas across the country with filled fuel tanks . At 8:46 am the first plane, American Airlines flight 11, which had originated from Boston was piloted into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York . In addition, the second plane, United Airlines flight 175, also from Boston, hit the south tower 17 minutes later . The two towers were “badly damaged by the impact and erupted” into flames . Some individuals who were trapped in the higher floors of the building were essentially left with no choice than to jump to their deaths instead of burning in the “infernos raging” inside the towers. The third plane, American Airlines flight 77, which departed from an airport near Washington, D.C., hit the southwest side of the Pentagon at 9.37 a.m., causing mass destruction and raging fires . The fourth hijacked airplane, United Airlines flight 93, which departed from Newark, New Jersey, crashed close to Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to subdue their attackers . Unfortunately, at 9:59 am the World Trade Center’s “heavily damaged” south tower gave in and collapsed and

September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
