Academic & Experiential Learning The manner with which school counselors are encouraged in taking on prevention and intervention strategies will be utilized through is a combination of psychoeducational and small groups. Psychoeducational groups work on developing and expanding students’ cognitive, social and behavioral perceptions of drug use (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2014) while counseling groups will focus on personal, emotional and social/interpersonal development, problem-solving and in introducing new skill sets, which students can practice and apply outside of the school setting. In order for counselors to effectively combine characteristics of academic learning and experiential learning, they must plan accordingly and implement interactive counseling approaches and interactive media. In forming the parameters for a discussion in each group session, it is important for school counselors to provide students with empirical data, social views, historical narratives and the risks of substance use and alcohol consumption. Counselors should also have two or three questions based on that group session’s discussion that students can talk about. The first small counseling group should also explain the counselor’s purpose, plan and overview for the entirety of the small groups. Additionally, the group facilitator should spend some time explaining informed consent, termination of group, ethical limitations to counseling minors and confidentiality rights of their students.…
