Irish novelist and non-fiction writer Joseph O’Neill once said, “One of the great pluses of being an immigrant is you get to start again in terms of your identity. You get to shed the narratives which cling to you.” If I would have heard this quote in high school, or even two and half years ago when I was starting my freshman year of college, I would definitely not agree. I would have told you that I was American and that there was no way I would identify as being an immigrant. Now, here I am three years later and I understand what he means by that comment. After becoming thoroughly interested in my culture and everything that we went through as a race, I understand that in some ways I too am an immigrant. During elementary school I would notice the intellectual difference between myself and my peers, but because of the way I was raised, I never made it a huge deal. My classmates all had parents that were barley in their twenties, while my mother was in her early thirties. I grew up in a family where education was number one. All of my aunts and my mother were teachers. They always instilled the value of education to me. Having aunts and a mother as teachers meant that school never ended. While most children would dread that, I’ve always enjoyed it. I believe this is what sparked my interest in becoming a teacher. It was not until I became a senior in high school that I accepted the career choice of education. I graduated high school with honors, and twenty-four hours of college credit. When I arrived at UTSA, I was two classes away from being a sophomore. It wasn’t until I began my education classes that I found my true passion. I was my mother’s only child for eight years. In 2004, she gave birth to my younger brother. He changed everyone’s life. My younger brother, along with my special education course allowed me to realize that I was more intrigued with working with students who have learning disabilities. Learning about all learning disabilities and how they form was much more interesting to me than teaching students who may be gifted. During the time that I was taking the special
