In other words, babies being born 3 weeks before their due date. Births at 32 weeks or under are considered extremely critical due to higher mortality rate. According to the article Born Too Soon, "15 million babies are born prematurely each year, that is 1 in 10 babies born worldwide, and 1 million die due to complications of preterm." Premature births are the leading cause of infant death within the first 4 weeks of life. Even though apnea is a limited of time issue and the neonates grow out of it is still a severe issue. There are number of arguments to why premature neonates have apnea from not fully developed brain and weak airway muscles. Other stresses that can worsen apnea in a sick premature; feeding, anemia, heart with lung problems, infection, low oxygen levels, overstimulation and body temperature regulation issues. Premature infants often have an irregular breathing pattern with short episodes (5-10) second of either shallow breathing or no breathing (apnea.). These episodes are followd by periosd of normal brathing . When there is a very shallow or apnea, the baby may also have a drop in thir their heart rate or in othere words bradycardia. Some infants may alos have a poor color and an ill looking apearanc. Apnea episosed that last longer thatn 20 seconds are considered serious. Sue to mort preterim and some sick full term infants have some degree of apnea they are often monitored to monitor their vital signs such as heart rate, respirations and saturations. Bradicara with apnea can set off alarams to notify the staff. , Infants that develop apnea of Prematurity (AOP). AOP is identified when the infant has a sudden pause of breathing lasting 15 to 20 seconds. The upper airway reflexes tend to be inhibit and they become apneic. Immaturity decreases
