When the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ started becoming more and more prominent, and people were becoming more aware of what exactly ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is, they began asking: “who is someone that is famous that suffers or has suffered from this disease?” Most people’s obvious answer is Lou Gehrig, who is a famous baseball player that succumbed to this disease back in the early 1900s, and happens to be the other name people refer this disease as. I answered with “Stephen Hawking”, and people would give me a bewildered look as if asking me “who the heck is that?” I would stare back in absolute shock and little bit of horror, because honestly, who has not heard of the man that basically theorized black holes and extended Einstein’s idea of general relativity with quantum physics theory. Stephen Hawking, who is a little less than a god, is “arguably the most famous scientist alive today (Contributions and Achievements)”, and I would say that he is definitely one of the most important scientific figures that has ever been introduced to the human race. This essay will present Stephen Hawking and dive deep into his life pulling out the smallest particulars, and then explaining how certain and specific details have made him into who and what he is today. To start with, here’s a brief Stephen Hawking biography. Stephen William Hawking was born to Frank and Isobel Hawking on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, United Kingdom.
