And in order to keep up with the demands and advancements in the medical field, healthcare facilities must have the professionals, equipment, and resources. In line with this, there has been a rise in demand for medical assistants (MAs).

At 17 years old, I had the grueling task of deciding how I wanted to spend 40 plus years of my life. I always aspired to land a career in the medical field, so I majored in biology like most pre-med hopefuls, but during my junior year, I no longer desired to become a physician. The medical field was calling out to me, but the specialty of focus was incorrect. After graduation, I went back to the basics and put my nursing assistant certification to use.

In the health care field, there are many opportunities one can explore. A few examples of healthcare career options vary from respiratory therapists, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technicians, medical assistants, to the more common hospitalists, physicians, and registered nurses. Of course each position requires certain education requirements and various qualifications to be accepted into the desired healthcare position. Here in the Texas area we are known for having the Houston Medical center with that center comes organizations and jobs for Medical assistants.

A Medical Assistants job depends on which state you work in and the type of place you work in. This job can be very easy but it has a lot of responsibilities such as keeping the office organized also work with patients in the exam room. Some of the responsibilities/Tasks are to answer the phone when someone calls about a medical issue and schedule them an appointment, record, update and fill out medical information on the forms, they also have to greet the patients and answer any questions they might have. Also they have to communicate with the physician and the patient, manage bills and bookkeeping. Also they have to fill out and complete the patients’ insurance forms and arrange the hospital admission and/or lab procedures for the patients.

The reason why I want to be a medical assistant is very dear and personal to me. First, my mother is a type I diabetic. Growing up, I recall her having many issues with her glucose levels being elevated. I assisted by giving her insulin shots and helping her check her blood sugar regularly. She’s now on an insulin pump and is facing a pancreas transplant if her medicine fails to help. Next, my Grandma Scherer suffered from diabetes. I always attempted to be of aid when her glucose dropped by keeping sweets nearby. After her kidneys failed in 2005, she went on dialysis. Consequently, she succumbed to diabetes in August of 2007. Using the SMART method, my long term goal is to continue my work as a CNA while applying for healthcare administrator positions. I would like to work as an administrator for at least 3 years for any medical setting. While working, I will be looking into ways on how I can own and operate a home healthcare agency. According to Marak, (2017), I really don’t need to have experience in the medical industry; I would just need to have the passion for providing care, the marketing savvy, an understanding of business knowledge, and integrity. With my CNA experience, along with my other work experiences, I am half way there.
