New York Market I will be graduating in May with a double major in IPR and theatre. I have spent some time researching opportunities in my IPR education for post-graduation, but I haven’t done much looking into my theatre side, so I wanted to take this opportunity to do just that. I deciding to focus on strictly my theatre major and where that could take me after I graduate with the goal of getting to New York City. First, I wanted to investigate summer acting apprenticeship opportunities. I am not interested in going to graduate school, but I did look into the Summer Training Congress for the American Conservatory Theatre. Acting apprentices have the opportunity to audition for these shows and could be working side-by-side with professional equity actors. Apprentices also have a chance to perform in the many Cabaret style shows performed throughout the season and can earn weeks towards Equity cards. To apply in person, you can audition at the North Central Regional Auditions held at the California University of Pennsylvania in January. However, since that could be a bit of a travel, there is also the option of applying online. This would consist of submitting all the audition materials and then recording an audition of two contrasting songs and two contrasting monologues. Apprentices do have to pay for their own housing, but a weekly scholarship of $175 is given to help cover expenses. By September of 2018 I plan to be living in New York City. I looked for acting apprenticeships in the city, but there really seem to be none available. However, there are many acting classes and smaller theatres or groups to get involved in to help keep skills sharp and get your foot in the door of the theatre community. So the big concern as an actor in New York would be finding an agent. It is tough because they want to see you work before working with you, but to get work you need an agent.
