This past summer, I ultimately decided that I needed to pursue a major in theatre. I'd previously considered theatre more of a hobby that I couldn't allow to interfere with my other schoolwork, then warmed up to potentially minoring in theatre, but after I spent almost my entire summer in an acting program and finally had the opportunity to immerse myself in studying theatre without worrying about my everyday schoolwork, I realized there was no other option for me. I am interested in applying for the acting apprenticeship for the Commonweal Theater Company for the 2017-2018 program. I am a recent graduate of Carleton College, with a degree in Biology, but I have always had a passion for theater and the performing arts. I started dancing when I was 4, was in my first play when I was 8, was a competitive cheerleader and performed in musicals in high school. When I studied at Carleton I danced for student-led ensembles, choreographed for musicals, sang in choir, took voice lessons, and acted in student films and faculty-directed plays. However, like any performer, I faced rejection along the way. I knew that if I wanted to succeed I could never let the dismissals get to me, though sometimes this was harder than others.

There are no standard educational or training requirements for the position of producer (CIC 154). Most producers have studied film, video production, or drama at the college level. Many have also trained as actors in dramatic arts schools. People who may be accepted need at least a bachelor’s degree or two years of on-set experience and also must pass written tests. Courses in acting and communications can be helpful. My entire life I have been fascinated with film and commercials. As a kid, I would stop what I was doing to watch a commercial. This has not changed through the years. My goal in life is to work in the film industry and work with video. This may have developed from my brother’s short term love for the video arts. Like most little brothers I followed in his footsteps through a lot of things and most of them would not stick. As I grew older I developed my own different ideals and likes. But, video just stuck with me. Even if film production doesn’t work out I have always had a childlike excitement for fighting fires.
