Everything happens at least once in a person’s life. From their birth to their death; their first love to their first heart break. Sometimes everything can happen very fast, and other times it seems like nothing is happening but yet everything is happening. One good of example of this is in the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder. In the play, the readers follow the character Emily Gibbs as she shows off her traits of caring, love, and realization throughout her life and her afterlife. Emily really shows off her trait of caring when she first falls in love with George. The reader sees how much she really cares for people and no just herself. An example of this is when, Emily wants George to be the best he can be. She points out to him how much
As we are reading the story, we can tell that the narrator is very sympathetic to Miss Emily although that did not condemn her actions. Although it is not said in the story, the readers could tell the narrator admired the way she associated with the lower-class. This gives the reader more acknowledgement on Miss Emily and we feel pity and sorrow for her.

Our Town is play written a while ago, but it relates to any time. Showing that routine is a part of everybody’s life. No matter what day and age you live in your going to have a routine. In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird," Harper Lee writes about the importance of the mockingbird. It is stated in the story "It is a sin to kill a mockingbird," because they only produce beautiful music and do not cause the trouble that other animals do. Harper Lee presents this theme through several characters including Atticus, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley. These characters represent the mockingbird because they were discriminated and attacked for no reason. Also, they sacrificed their good images in order to help other people face their conflicts.
Our Town by Thornton Wilder is about a modest town called Grover’s Corners, and the 3 different stages of life that everyone goes through. The play’s culture is something that is eternal that's no matter what you do, you will always go back to your home. My culture is that everyone has a mind of their own and is able to learn from their mistakes and change from it. With the play it was set in the 1900s while my culture is in 2016. In life, people will go through so many things, but it doesn’t make us different from each other, we all go through and manage to get through it. In the 1900s, people went through experiencing in 2016 what we currently go through. It's not that different it’s how we learned from our experiences that change
The reader can tell that Emily has picked up the hints that George has given her when she confronts her mom to ask a related question. Emily asks her mom “Mama, am I good looking?” (p.31). Emily asks this after she was doing homework with George; this is when she first realized that she was developing feelings for him. She starts to take on this type of daze that the stage manager was telling the audience, how “you didn’t quite see the street you were in and didn’t quite hear everything that was said to you.”
Has anything ever happened in your life that changed you as a person? Jem, a character in To Kill A Mockingbird, breaks his arm and it helps shape him into the person he ended up being because it was a major event in his life. He was changed by this event because it was a major event, Bob was going to kill him so how he overcomes it will show the type of person he is. Major things that happen in your life help shape who you are today.
A quote from Joseph Addison states that “True benevolence, or compassion, extends itself through the whole of existence and sympathizes with the distress of every creature capable of sensation.” “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee is taken place in Maycomb, Alabama during the early 30s. It focuses mainly on a father of two kids named Atticus who is defending a black man in a rape trial. There is numerous amount of prejudices and racism seen in the small town of Maycomb County. Storytelling is a tradition that has been part of the human race for millennia. Throughout the years, humans have told the next generation stories about what their predecessors had done before them, whether it be big events like international wars, or little events like one’s family history. The act of retelling history is often categorized as something done in order for those in the younger generations to learn from their ancestors’ mistakes. However, the author of the play Our Town, Thornton Wilder, challenges this notion. Wilder’s play is a flashback to the small town of Grover’s Corners in 1901. It tells the story of the residents in Grover’s Corners, an average small town, and narrates
“Our Town” is an American classic written by Thornton Wilder in 1938. Even though it was written over 50 years ago it still resonates deep within its audience,”Our Town” is full of relatable characters that everyone has known at some point in their lives. For instance, Mrs.Gibbs is the mother figure in this play that we all wish we had or reminds us of our own warm and kind mothers. She is one of the characters that helps spur the play’s main theme: Mortality. The 3 acts of “Our Town” show her transition of being full of emotions & passion to being impassioned and numb.
Claude G. Bowers once stated that, “History is the torch that is meant to illuminate the past, to guard us against the repetition of our mistakes of other days”. Since the day Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was published in the year of 1885, its existence was immediately embroiled in controversy and for the past century, the question of whether it deems worthy of being taught in high schools still remains at the center of heated debates today. For many reasons, it should be conserved in shelves and be taught to young adults in high school. With all of the events that have occurred in the past, such as the ending of segregation in public schools and the passing of the Voting Right Act, this novel didn’t stand in the
Emily is a character surrounded by mystery, leaving a mark on the influence of others, causing them to create their own scenarios about her life. It happened when she met Homer, when everyone hoped she will marry him, or when she bought poison and everyone thought she would poison herself. Her high wealthy status and respect were emphasized when she kicked out the people who
Moreover, I do not believe Emily is sympathetic due to the fact that she had a very difficult childhood and her lack of social skills makes it hard for her to show emotion towards anything. The author did
Many families have a father who is drunk all of the time while also doing nothing productive for the family, and a kid who means well but makes the wrong decision many time. In the story this story Twain portrays Huck as a character who is innocent but makes the wrong decision sometimes, while his father Pap is an awful drunk who doesn’t care for him at all. Mark Twain uses realistic traits to explain the life of the very complex characters in the book Huckleberry Finn, making the story relatable to even the newest generation of readers.
To be an individual it means to be one person without having a society to manipulate or shape someone into someone that person doesn’t want to be or doesn’t fit the way they are. In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Song of Myself and What we fought for come together to express the concept of individualism/ self-worth and equality while at the same time illustrating these ideas through first-hand accounts and historical time frames. At the time these stories were written they were able to give hope or comfort to people who were struggling during the industrial revolution, civil war and slavery. Some people were more likely affected such as those in slavery and workers who barely had enough to eat. As the years went on few people knew about these tales since it would be considered a “sin” if anyone wanted to express their inner self to the public eye. For this reason, one or two of these tales were hidden from anyone to ever read since they feared it would unleash the power inside an individual that will lead them to believe being free was accepted.
