A Chemical Reaction

Introduction: In everything there are things called particles; and sometimes when two particles meet a chemical reaction occurs. Also, with different strategies the chemical reaction can be sped up or slowed down. This is measured with reaction rate which is used to measure the length of a chemical reaction. The denture cleaning tablets consist of many ingredients; some of the active ingredients include sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, sodium perborate, sodium polyphosphate, potassium monopersulfate, EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). The denture cleaning tablets were invented in the 1930s by a man named Alexander Block. (Denture cleaner, 2013) It was predicted that the reaction rate would change due to…show more content…
If the concentration of the solution is increased the particles have less room to move around which creates a greater chance of collisions. The surface area of the reactant greatly affects the speed of which it reacts because if the reactant is grinded up or cut up the solution has more room to get to it. The reaction rate can be calculated by the formulae; rate of reaction = total amount of reactant used or product made ÷ time taken. (Collision theory and rates of reaction, 2013) Question: What is the reaction rate for Denture Cleaning tablets in 5 different temperatures of water? Hypothesis: It was hypothesised the colder the water is, the slower the tablet dissolves and the hotter the water gets, the faster the tablet dissolves. This is due to the particles heating up and getting excited thus separating the particles faster. It was suspected that the 20°C tablet in water would finish dissolving at 6 minutes, the 40° would dissolve at 4 minutes and the 50° would dissolve at 2 minutes. Also it was suspected that the 30°C tablet in water would dissolve after 4 minutes and the 60°C would finish dissolving after 1 minute.
