One of the focuses for psychologists is human development. Humans go through several stages of development, one of them being infant development. This stage is critical to a child’s cognitive growth. The various stages of infant development each hold equal significance and should be developed appropriately. Infants are especially sensitive and receptive to certain stimuli during this stage. One of the physical developments occurring in infants during this time is a fifty percent increase in brain mass. This stage of development is clearly crucial to the development process. Some things that were unclear regarding this stage involves the lack of the stages during this period, development per different cultures, the presence of a caregiver …show more content…
The development of the body is essential to the development process because a child is growing and strengthening muscles that will soon be necessary for day-to-day life. While this behavior will naturally develop on its own, environmental and experiential factors can act to slow or speed this process.
A second behavioral development that occurs during infancy is contact comfort. This is when an infant gives a positive response from stimulation from their parent or caregiver. Infants are already drawn to their caregiver due to the rooting reflex that developed during the neonatal stage, contact comfort is takes this reflex a step further. The infant will most likely seek a reassuring touch from this caregiver or parent. Harry Harlow, an American psychologist, did an experiment with monkeys to demonstrate this. Different monkeys were given different caregivers, one group had a very cold, robotic looking monkey as a caregiver and the other group had a soft, loving-looking monkey as a caregiver. While the monkeys with the robotic caregiver went to their caregiver for necessities, such as food, they would cling to the other, more comforting, mother monkey due to the soft touch they would receive. This experiment by Harlow demonstrates the innate need for comfort from caregivers or parents.
The third behavioral development stage during infancy is attachment. Attachment involves the social and emotional relationship between an infant and his or
The babies physical development "provides children with the abilities they need to explore and interact with the world around them"
The development of attachment bonds to other biological figures plays an important role in emotional development. Throughout life, an individual will form several relationships, some of which will be sincere and intimate while others will be superficial. However, collectively these relationships provide the foundation of our communities, families, and friendships and become essential to our survival as a species. A secure attachment bond can be classified as the interactive emotional relationship between a caregiver and infant involving the emotional responses of the caregiver to the infant 's cues (Bowlby, 1969). These emotional responses can be expressed in a variety of forms including gestures, sounds, or even movements. Thus, this interactive emotional relationship between the caregiver and infant brings the two closer together creating an environment that allows the infant to feel safe and secure, further developing their ability to communicate and interact with others (Bowlby, 1969).
According to, zero to three, social and emotional development in infants are building relationships and helping infants develop trust, empathy, compassion and a sense of right and wrong.
Physical development is like the process that starts in as a child and continues as you grow up, fine motor skills as well as puberty. When saroo was young he struggled with Physical development. He lived in poverty so they weren't fed the best plates of food with the best nourishment he was very small and scrawny. Plus as young as he was he would go help his mom with work. Saroo and I are on two different level while he'd be working with his mom i was probably in pre-K learning my ABC’s getting 3 meals a day with snack in between.
· Pre Attachment Phase – from birth to 3 months. From 6 weeks the baby
Technological advances in the past decade have allowed scientists to study the brain in ways that have led to new understanding about how young children develop. There is a new understanding of both the capabilities and the vulnerabilities of infants and young children and that understanding is has influenced the work of caregivers and teachers. During pregnancy, the basic architecture of the brain is formed. Although, certain experiences do influence the developing brain during pregnancy, such as maternal health and stress, intake of drugs and/or alcohol, and quality of maternal nutrition.
Research has shown that the way the caregiver and infant interact has a significant effect on the maturation of the infant's nervous system,
There are four phases to develop attachment. Pre-attachment phase is from birth to 6 weeks, and it’s the time when infants start to contact with people.
According to Erik. H. Erikson eight stages of human development states trust versus mistrust is the first stage of human development. Sense of security is achieved through parental gratification of needs and affection. Infants like to be held close and cuddled when awake, this is another type of social development that helps infants to establish an emotional attachment with their mother and father or guardian. Attachment is a emotional bond with others that is endured over time. Karen Huffman and Katherine Dowdell
There are many reasons why the environment that preschool children are brought up upon drastically affect their cognitive abilities. The inner and outer circle of the child’s surroundings affect their ability to develop their emotional intelligence, cognitive skills, and linguistic potential. Specifically, the difference in living in poor or affluent communities will immensely establish how preschool children cognitive abilities will emerge. Preschoolers who lived in underprivileged neighborhoods will have slower development in intellect than that of a well off community. The major factors that lead to these distinctions of intellectual advancement are poverty, education, and community values.
There are many different things that shape the cognitive development of children. To begin with cognitive development is when a child develops how to process, solve problems, and start making decisions. Once they have learned this they take everything they have learned into their adolescence. An example, of what can shape the cognitive development of a child can be an educational game. Educational games can be very useful in shaping a child’s development because they are having fun while learning at the same time and what kid doesn’t like to play games, the fact that it is even educational makes it even better for them. Not only are they having fun but there are many different games that help in different categories of development in
The two sets of puzzles will be gender-neutral animal themed 60 piece puzzles. Puzzle set one includes Puppy Party, Caribbean Smile, and Tropical Friends all by Ravensburger. Puzzle set two includes Farm Chores, Panda Family, and Under the Sea by Ravensburger. A smartphone was used as a stopwatch and to record and show the video of the “edges first” schema. The video will be less than ten minutes and will show the completion of the puzzle through the point of view of the person working on it. A parental consent form and an assent form taken from the University of Illinois at Chicago templates is used to comply with the IRB policies.
According to Bowlby, survival is dependent on a healthy attachment. This bond reflects an enduring socio-emotional relationship. (Zastrow, C., & Kirst-Ashman, K, 2013) This bond is developed in four stages. Stage 1 is Preattachment. During this stage the infant may cry attempting to seek a response, such as comfort, from the caregiver. From birth to 8 weeks of life, infants use this tactic to signal caregivers. Infants learn to distinguish between people and things (Zastrow, C., & Kirst-Ashman, K, 2013) Infant usually forms different types of responses to caregiver to signal his or her wants and needs. Stage 2 is Attachment in the Making. Infants are between the ages of 6 weeks and 6-8 months old. Infants usually start to gain a sense of trust from caregivers. Caregivers begin to respond in positive ways when interacting with the
To evaluate the approaches used to enhance child brain development, I asked Ms. Kees, “Why do you feel it is important to enhance a child 's brain development?” Ms. Kees answered “It is important to enhance a child 's brain development due to the fact that it affects every aspect of their life. If a student 's brain is not enhanced properly, deficits such as reading, writing, and math abilities are affected. Brain development is important for everyday living skills, such as telling time, counting money and being able to purchase products from the store. Trauma early in life also affects brain development and that is what my students suffer from
A child 's brain is always growing and absorbing new information. Thus meaning early education is a fundamental part of a child’s development. Experts say that one of the best ways for children to expand their minds and grow their opportunities is to learn a foreign language (Kathleen M. Marcos). While starting school can be intimidating for a child, it can seem even more daunting starting their education in a language different from what is spoken at home. However, the few challenges that come along with this experience are greatly outweighed by the benefits. Most research conclusively shows that there are many ways in which foreign language education aids in different aspects of a child’s life . There are four main areas in which children benefit from: academic, social, cognitive and personal. While it seems that learning a second language creates a well-rounded child who receives a number of benefits, the process does not come without any difficulty. It is speculated by some guardians, although not yet proven through research, that children who start learning in a bilingual home may begin speaking later than their monolingual counterparts (Multilingual Children 's Association). Despite this speculation, experts have shown that learning a foreign language may be challenging for young minds, the benefits are far greater in regards to their futures (Damon Verial).
