Charles wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843. This short novel has a
Christmas theme and has been popular since it was first published.
This moral story is about an old man called Scrooge who hates
Christmas and is mean to everyone, but he is transformed. The lessons he learns are as much for the reader to benefit from as Scrooge. His transformation is the key event in the novel and the reader clearly sees Scrooge before and after his experiences. This process will now be explored more fully.
'A Christmas Carol', by Charles Dickens
When we first meet Scrooge he is described as a cold-hearted, selfish, evil man. He was a 'Tight-fisted hand at the grindstone', 'A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!'. He is

I think Dickens created this character to show that
Scrooge deliberately avoids friendly human contact.
Dickens includes the visit of the portly gentlemen to show just how mean and selfish Scrooge is. Even though Scrooge is rich he won't even give a penny to the poor. The portly gentlemen are there to collect money for the poor and homeless. One portly gentleman says people are suffering and are freezing in the cold. Scrooge asks whether prisons and Union workhouses are 'still in operation?' and slyly jokes 'Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course'. Scrooge knows that this is a way out of giving money to the poor. The reader can't help but get the impression that these are ready excuses. Finally one portly gentleman asked how much he should put him down for, and Scrooge simply says
'nothing'. Scrooge's reaction to these gentlemen after his transformation will contrast greatly.
Scrooge treats his clerk Bob Cratchit very badly. His working conditions are poor, 'a dismal little cell' with very little heat.
Scrooge complains the clerk has no right to have every 25th December off and that it is really 'picking a man's pocket'. Yet Scrooge grudgingly allows the day off but says 'be here all the earlier the
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was first published in London on the 19th of December 1843, the novella was instantly popular and still is to this day. Dickens inspiration for the short story seems to come from his childhood experiences and his sympathy for the poor. In the story a miserable old man, Ebenezer Scrooge, is shown the error of his ways and what will come of it if he doesn’t make drastic changes. Various ghosts and spirits slowly transform him into a kinder more pleasant man. A Christmas Carol is a powerful novella that uses symbolism like the children Ignorance and Want, Scrooge’s transformation, and Scrooges nephew Fred, to reinforce significant themes like social isolation, rebirth, and family.
'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens allow readers to be positioned to identify what he values in society and his beliefs of the consequences in life and in Christianity as shown through Scrooge's transformation. Scrooge was a coldhearted and frosty man who has been given a second chance in life to alter his view towards Christmas, and most importantly, the happiness in the world by becoming charitable, and positive while maintaining self respect and value. Through the teachings from the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, Dickens demonstrates a defiant and isolated character who transforms into a changed man imbued with Christmas
In A Christmas Carol, an allegory of spiritual values versus material ones, Charles Dickens shows Scrooge having to learn the lesson of the spirit of Christmas, facing the reality of his own callous attitude to others, and reforming himself as a compassionate human being. The reader is shown his harshness in the office, where he will not allow Bob Cratchit enough coal to warm his work cubicle and begrudges his employee a day off for Christmas, even claiming that his clerk is exploiting him. In the scene from the past at Fezziwig’s warehouse, Scrooge becomes aware of the actions of a conscientious, caring employer and feels his first twinge of conscience. The author suggests an origin for Scrooge’s indifference to others as Scrooge is portrayed as a neglected child, the victim of a harsh father intent on denying him a trip home for the holidays and only reluctantly relenting.
In the beginning of the book, “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is a cold, selfish and greedy man. He owns a business and is rich, but never does anything good with his money and keeps it to himself. He thinks of Christmas as a useless holiday and does not care to talk or smile to anybody he sees. However, as the spirits of the past, present and future visit him, Scrooge becomes much kinder and wants to become a better person. He learns to care for others and becomes more engaged in his community.
Christmastime brings joy and happiness to most people, Ebenezer Scrooge is not of them. Scrooge at the beginning of the story is a grumpy old miser that believes that Christmas is a humbug and thinks that "Its less of a time of being merry, and more of a time of being loony". Scrooge is very rude and nasty especially to his nephew when he asks him to come to his dinner and say " I'd rather see myself dead than with your family. ". Scrooge, when businessmen come to ask for revisions for the poor Scrooge, asks very rudely " Are there no prisons" As you can tell Scrooge is not the nicest person and needs to change but what can make Scrooge change.
Dickens indirectly characterizes Scrooge in many ways in A Christmas Carol. He does this by showing how greedy, hateful, and cold hearted scrooge is. The first way he characterizes Scrooge is by showing how cold hearted he is. In A Christmas Carol dicken describes how scrooge's heart has froze. Dicken states “The cold within him froze”(621). Scrooge's heart cold he is to everyone and everything. Scrooge is so cold that his heart has froze.Scrooge is so cold towards everyone and thinks there is no reason to be happy. Making christmas especially not important to Scrooge. Since christmas is a holiday to be happy Scrooge thinks christmas is a waste of time and their is no reason to be marry. This is indirect characterizes towards scrooge because he is cold hearted.
In Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol there's many themes and symbolism that are compelling to the novel. Such as Scrooge character development through a miserable man that hates Christmas and people around him that would rather be in his little cocoon of a shell then commute and gather with the people that loves him and would want to share the holiday spirit with him. Scrooge in the story is cold as ice and does some inherent and despicable Things in the story. Such as showing how uncaring he is to the poor and people who lower then Him in class. In the depiction of the book, a man ask Scrooge for money many times for donation to the needy but Scrooge neglects him time after time. This summarize how uncaring he is to the poor and how selfish he is
In the story, A Christmas Carol, the author, Charles Dickens, uses Scrooge to critique the society of Victorian times. A Christmas Carol takes place in the 1800s, which is around the time period that Dickens grew up in. In the novel, as well as in Dickens’s childhood, the Industrial Revolution is taking effect, which is a large contributing factor in his commencement of writing the book. In the novel, Charles Dickens uses the character of Scrooge to critique Victorian society through his greed and ill-treatment of the poor. In the end, however, Dickens has Scrooge reform his ways to become a more charitable man to show that if the people in Victorian society reform their ways and become more charitable, than they will be better off.
In the beginning of the story, “A Christmas Carol”, Scrooge is grouchy, selfish, and mean to everyone. All he cares about is money (material good) in the beginning of the story. He isn’t a overjoyed person with this material good. He tells his son he rather be dead than be with his family, he says mean things to the 2 men going around collecting money, and sometimes he is even mean to Cratchit. Also notice, this is when he doesn’t have any family around him. After going through memories/experiences, he sees the type of person he was, is, and going to become. Scrooge changes his ways because of the memories/experiences he was shown by the spirits. In the end, Scrooge doesn’t cherish material goods any more, he cherishes experiences. Scrooge goes around giving money away in good deeds like it means nothing to him anymore, he gives money to the portly man, and a raise to Cratchit. He does this just out of the kindness of his heart. He is only interested now in being a positive, kind person, not the person he used to be. Notice, he is a very happy man at this point in the story. This is when he is developing friends and having family closer to him than ever. For me, I feel Dickens is trying to tell us how an experience can change a
Scrooge is a mean person who has a very interesting life when he meets three spirits that helped over time. Scrooge was a person who thought business was all about money. Since of that Scrooge became a mean and selfish man over time and throughout the story. This shows that in a Christmas Carol Charles Dickens shows us that the business in life is to help other 9, through Scrooge’s changes throughout the story.
The Spirits of all three shall strive within me”(page 11, stave IV). This shows that Scrooge accepts he’s in need of change he also has figured out that he must respect Christmas as something other than a holiday for picking a man’s pocket. Scrooge is then shown as generous and selfless when he wakes up on Christmas morning, Scrooge looks out his window and sees a little boy. Scrooge then remembers that his colleague [Bob Cratchit] wanted the prize turkey for his Christmas feast, Scrooge asks the boy to fetch the butcher and says “Come back with the man, and I’ll give you a shilling. Come back with him in less than five minutes and I’ll give you half-a-crown.”(Page 2, Stave V). This again shows that Scrooge is being
At first in the story a Christmas carol by Charles Dickens Scrooge is portrayed as a Victorian miser Ebenezer Scrooge,It takes place in the historical Victorian era when poverty was at an all time high, the richer kept getting richer and the poorer or more poorer. He was a heartless, cruel miser who makes money out of others financial inadequacy. In the end of the novel he is described as generous and clean hearted. Dickens is saying that no matter how cruel, hard, old, bitter and unpleasant you are there is good in you and you can change for the greater good. From bitter and obnoxious to generous and kin-hearted the book is a drastic change for old man Scrooge.
Based on what I read Scrooge is a grumpy person with no feeling for the people around him. Dickens doesn't like this and says it is a big no-no is his world. Scrooge spends money on only what he needs to get by. He doesn't get why Christmas is such a big deal, even though everyone else is celebrating it with cheer. In fact, he hates the Christmas cheer and expresses his feelings. He despises poor people and say that they should go to jail. He does not have any joy, but he’s not depressed. Scrooge almost wants to damage people's day and does it often. The text says he is a hard worker as it states “he was a tight-fisted hand at the grind-stone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!” He can also really stand the elements, the cold., the hot, the rain, the snow, the… anything. Not only can he withstand the elements, but based on the information from the text I inferred that he is the elements, resilient and unforgiving.
When reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens you realize that Scrooge’s childhood has a huge impact on his adult life, his adult self is a mirror image of his child self, both in his emotions and relationships. This becomes apparent when the ghost of Christmas past appears and takes Scrooge on a journey back into his childhood days. His childhood really molds Scrooge into the person he becomes later in life.
The movie A Christmas Story has always been a family favorite and tradition, so when the opportunity came up to go and see it as a theater production, my mom and I knew that is exactly what we wanted to see. On December 2nd, my mom and I spent the day together by getting dinner, going shopping, and ending the night with a play. A Christmas Story the Musical was produced by the Morgantown Theatre Company and directed by Hillary Phillips, both whom did an outstanding job making sure everything was perfect from beginning to end. When I was in elementary school every year we would go to a play produced by the same company, so going back as a sophomore in college brought back fun childhood memories, as did seeing my childhood favorite Christmas movie on stage. I personally believe that this production was directed, preformed, and thought out extremely well with an overall experience of excitement, laughter, and the Christmas spirit!
