A Woman in Blue and a Beetle in Gold
Many things can determine the differences between 2 paintings, so the two works by Yvonne Estrada and Steven R. Kutcher, are very different in many ways, very similar. These two paintings mostly differ in painter, and medium, but are similar in their use of color. They painters of these two works are very different, so different that Steven R. Kutcher wasn’t really the one who painted Sunrise No.1. The real painter of Sunrise No.1 was an unnamed darkling beetle. A beetle who paints. Kutcher is what you may call, “a bug guy”. He has helped with many bug related movies, including James and the Giant Peach, so when director, Steven Spielberg needed a shot of a fly walking through ink, Kutcher was happy to help, which started his interest in insect art. Yvonne Estrada is a woman, who is most famous for her collection of works entitled Blue. She gets her inspiration for Blue through nature, which is why many of her pieces include shapes that look to be flowers or leaves. Estrada and Kutcher (or darkling beetles), do not have a whole lot in common.

In all of Estradas works she uses a paint called Gouache, which is similar to watercolor, but more opaque. She also uses a mix of pens, graphite, and even regular water. Kutcher gets his insect’s feet wet with paint and has them walk around. After he gets them painted up enough, he can sit back and watch them go. The two painters also have a very different procedure. Estrada looks for signs of work in nature and draws and paints what she sees. She will also let the paint drip down the canvas to create a neat effect. Kutcher gets paint on his insects, and sets them on a course for
The dark blue left eye and light blue right tells me that Pablo Picasso may have used her actual eye color. Her body is almost as if she had her back to Picasso and turning her torso toward him; such as in most contrapposto art. In the original sketch you can clearly see her arms and the detail of her body. She is not looking back at Picasso, but instead looking toward the opening curtain. The hair of the young lady is also more visible as it drapes down her back. By repositioning her arm and adding the mask he completely changed her appearance, not only in her face but her body as well. Picasso gave her a double point of view, as you look at her nose and the angles it provides. The hand under the chin gives it an almost claw like feature, with what seems to be her fingers going to her eye to her the opposite side of the chin. With the sharp angles and mask and all the distortion it would be difficult to truly see just the young lady. It is almost as if she is shards of glass pieced together to make a
Nolan’s painting style is noted for its fluidity, which he emphasized by applying unusual mediums—such as ripolin (an enamel house paint) and polyvinyl acetate—to masonite, glass, paper, or canvas.
“‘Treat all people -- even the most unsightly beetles -- as though they were angels sent from heaven’” (29). In Mawi Asgedom’s memoir, Of Beetles and Angels, he talks about the obstacles he faces through growing up. Throughout Mawi’s life he overcomes the obstacles of racial prejudice, school bullies, and financial disadvantage, which motivated him to build a fulfilling successful life.
quote from her about her work, "Mine is a quiet exploration— a quest for new meanings in color,
There are many ways to interpret this but I think the title is referring to a way of living. Haileab has always taught his children to accept people no matter what their situation is. Because of this many people have came into their lives and significantly made a difference on the way they view certain subjects in american culture.
Concerning color, there is a stark contrast between the figure on the painting and the background. More specifically, the figure of the woman is predominantly delineated in white color, especially pale, ashen white, as far her apparel and facial complexion are concerned, while there are also various hues of grey, with respect to her hair and accessory feather. These white and grey shades are vividly contrasted with the prevailing red and crimson hues of the background (viz. the drape, armchair, and table). Moreover, one can detect colors of dark green (jewelry), some beige on the left (pillar), and darker or lighter shades of blue on the right side of the canvas (sky), which all in concert and in addition to the subtle purple hue forming the sun or moon exude a certain dramatic sentiment. Also, there is brown, which often easily segues into gold (viz. books and attire details respectively). The main contrast of colors between white and red would be interpreted as serving the purpose of rendering the figure of the woman, and especially her face, the focal point of the work, despite, paradoxically enough, the lush red shades at the background. Bearing that in mind, the significance of the woman’s face will be enlarged upon later, when discussing aspects of her identity.
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most infamous and influential artists of all time. When I saw that Van Gogh’s painting “Olive Trees With Yellow Sky and Sun” was on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, I knew I had to choose it for this paper. Before doing the research for this assignment, I didn’t know much about Vincent Van Gogh, but the fact that pretty much everyone knows his name and recognizes him as a huge part of art history, it made me naturally really curious about him.
When you look at the two paintings; “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh, and “Number 1 1949” by Jackson Pollock; there are a few similarities about the meaning of the works of art. Their background and history are different. These paintings were created in two totally different eras and have different formal and technical aspects. Saying that, these works of art share no spiritual or moral value. Respectively these paintings have a great history and legacy. Two paintings created in different time periods have little in common but yet so much in common.
The colors for the painting are usually accomplished with naturally colored sand, such as crushed gypsum (white), yellow ochre, red sandstone, charcoal and a mixture of charcoal and gypsum (blue). Other coloring agents include corn meal, flower pollen, or powdered roots and bark. Sand paintings are not the only artforms created by the Navajo, there are also rugs.
Persistence is Everything In the book Of Beetles and Angels the main character Mawi Asgedom tells his story of going from a refugee camp in South Sudan to the graduation ceremony at Harvard. Along the way he faces many challenges such as other students at school, limited financial support, and losing his brother and closest friend Tewolde. The main lesson portrayed in this book is that if you are persistent you can do anything. This is shown through Mawi’s hard work in school, Haliebs dedication to helping people in need and in their whole family’s attitude of never giving up on their dream of establishing a life in the United States of America.
Color and technique is another major aspect of The Kiss. In creating this painting, Klimt gained inspiration from his travels to the Byzantine, the mosaics in Ravenna in particular. This inspiration is reflected in his use of gold and the arrangement of shapes. While the majority of the painting was done using golden hues (he uses actual gold leaf to achieve this affect), Klimt manages to apply all of the colors necessary to achieve intrigue and convey his message clearly. He uses vibrant colors such as; blue, purple, and green in the flowerbed. He strategically uses the gold by integrating it into the robes and vines that swathe over the figures and over the woman’s feet. He continues his theme of contrast and juxtaposition in his use of complimentary colors. The green in the flowerbed contrasts with the red in the woman’s dress, making her dominate and stand out. This contrast is even shown in the skin tones of the figures. The man has an olive complexion and the woman has a peach complexion, making her stand out
Bright colors jumping at you asking for attention, images so real viewers can not tell the difference. These are the thoughts that came to my head as I gazed at two works of art by two Mexican artists at MoLAA museum of art . I visited two museums, Bowers Museum of cultural Art in the heart of Southern California and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach for my report unfortunately I only liked the works in MoLAA and will talk about it through out my paper. I will talk about two Mexican artists Rafael Cauduro and David Alfaro Siqueros that caught my eye, and made me want to learn more of them and their approach to art. Siqueiros caught my eye and interest because according to his biography “no
Rhinoceros Beetle by Susan Hawthorne is a story about a young man with an obsession with animals and a penchant for treating women the same way. Rhinoceros Beetle undergoes a major tonal shift as the story goes from a whimsical tale of a destructive young boy, to a chilling story of a threatening and reserved man from a small town. As the story goes on, the foreshadowing becomes more obvious as you realize how suggestive and cacophonous the words are, which further develop the ominous tone. The way the author understates the boy’s actions in the beginning of the story take the reader down a path of realization as the implications of what he’d done later in his life becomes more apparent. The insipid yet obscure way that the short story is written ultimately leaves the audience in the dark with a few pieces of information that allows them to make an astute assumption of what happened to the women that were in the man’s home. Also, parallelism is used frequently throughout the story to portray the boy’s odd actions as being on the same level of his more mundane activities. All of these components successfully develop the ominous tone of the story, leaving the readers feeling that something awful or unpleasant was happening both in the boy’s past and in his now adult life.

He used oil paints, canvas and oil painting pens, the color of his oil painting are very heavy and bright, making his pictures colorful and powerful. The difference is that Guan Zhong Wu uses ink to draw abstract paintings. Ink is more diluted than oil paint because every time use ink painter need to put water in it, making his abstract paintings looks more concise and have different feeling. However, as long as painters understand this kind of painting, different painting tools will achieve different results. According to Zheng(2008:30-32),in the study of painting, students need to know the history of the development of painting tools, and the basic knowledge of how to use the painting tools, that will help them to create their own paintings. In conclusion, it is important for the painter to understand and use the appropriate drawing tools.
