For nearly two hundred years, Americans were stuck living between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. However, after the Americans won the Revolution and disbanded most of the Indians a sizeable white westward migration began. During the 1800s there were a variety of famous expeditions. This led to the expansion of what is now the United States. During these expeditions, many of the explorers wrote about their experience in the unknown territory. The danger they face was overbearing and almost cost them and their crew their lives.
Probably the most famous expedition in American history was the brainchild of Thomas Jefferson. Two young men, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, were a part of this long journey and wrote down valuable

Lewis spent the day “smoking with them and acquiring what information I could with respect to their country.” But he couldn’t help but notice their unusual lifestyle. He said the men “treat their women but with little rispect” and have them do most of the hard labor. They barely correct their children and even sell their daughters to be other men wives at the age of 14. But that wasn’t what he came for. In approximately ten days they would pass by the Spaniards at the Yellowstone River. They didn’t get along with the Spaniards because “the Spaniards will not let them have fire arms and ammunition,” because the Spaniards felt that it wasn’t for the best. To avoid their enemies they had to live in the mountains two thirds of the year with little food. So Lewis offer something they couldn’t turn down. In exchange for guns and ammunition, they would receive “skins of the beaver Otter and Ermin so abundant in their country.” This is what the Indians been waiting for, “whitemen that traded guns.” They told Lewis that they might “rest assured of their friendship and that they would do whatever we wished them.” With the help of the Indians Lewis and Clark were able to accomplish their
Lewis and Clark faced many things by going into the frontier land of Louisiana. Some of them were bears, disease from mosquitoes, pesky flies, strong currents, etc. This exploration arranged by Thomas Jefferson was, rather important but dangerous. Lewis and Clark’s expedition was probably the most important thing that Americans did during Jefferson's presidency. They found many Indian tribes, this was very dangerous, mostly because you don’t know if the tribes are friendly or not.
Based on Lewis and Clark's entries on the topography, climate, and fauna of western North America, sustainable white human settlement is very possible. In several entries, Clark and other crew members portray the lands surrounding the river on which they travel as beautiful flat plains, which are important to creating and sustaining a settlement. Moreover, in the majority of journal entries, each member describes the navigating conditions as fairly simple, with only a few exceptions over the middle of April. Without navigability, any settlement created will have economic difficulty as trading with neighboring settlements will be impeded.
Throughout early history, beginning with 1492, exploration was well on its way. European nations began heading west towards the New World in search of new trade routes to the East Indies. With support from kings through financial aid and moral guidance, a new peak was reached upon the arrival of Columbus in the Caribbean islands off the mainland of the Americas. Such an extraordinary event, future voyages were sent off to explore the rest of the New World by Spanish, French, and English ships and explorers. During these times of exploration, traveling nations encountered the Natives among the lands where they would then determine their future through alliances and conflicts. The settlement patterns, along with the attitudes of the American Indians that were encountered with by the Spanish, French and English exploration, can be compared and contrasted through the goals of these nations culturally and socially, and even through the opportunity for economic growth .
Throughout the 1800’s there were more and more Americans that had moved onto the frontier of the West coast. The people of the United States believed they were destined to have their land stretched from the Pacific Ocean (the west) to the Atlantic Ocean (the east); from sea to shining sea. This settlement came from the fact that the west not only had an abundance of fertile land for farming, but it had such a great abundance of gold and mineral mining available. The Americans also believed that this was a way (and chance) to spread their beliefs! Many people saw the West as a new beginning, so they decided to head West and begin this journey. This is what the Americans believed they were destined to do… The rapid settlement of the West was caused by the great desire of the American
The year is 1803 and Thomas Jefferson is the president of the united state . after buying the Louisiana territory Jefferson pick Meriwether Lewis to help him plan for western exploration and be the leader of the expedition .in January 18 , in secret communication to congress , Jefferson seeks authorization for expedition. later on Lewis invited William Clark to join him . and I Andrew Walter have been asked to join the expedition among many others.
This paper will explain why Lewis and Clark are two of the greatest explorers in American history. Some of the distinguishing factors of these explorers and the three main points in this paper are their exploration of the uncharted west by way of the Missouri river, the many discoveries made along the way, and the effect they had on the westward expansion of the United States.
The expedition of Lewis and Clark was a landmarking event in American history, but its significance goes beyond just the land they discovered. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was put forward so the two would be able to see and map out western America in search of new trade routes and passages. Lewis and Clark would have doubtfully survived had it not been with the aid of the Indians they met on their travels. Upon their controversial meetings with several Indian groups, Lewis and Clark were not respectful to the Americans they met on their journey. The controversial messages behind the peace metals, the reference to the Indians as “children”, and the physical
Although the land that Lewis and Clark traveled was uncharted, it wasn’t uninhabited. Even the first white explorers of the land had encountered the native peoples. These Indian tribes could be found in almost every area that Lewis and Clark traveled through. The smart thing to do, then, is to appease the indians, which is exactly what they did. By simply giving supplies, services, and promises of good will to each tribe, Lewis and Clark traveled mostly unhindered by the indians. In addition to this, many tribes gave food, supplies, directions, or even men to the expedition. For example, in one of the journal entries for April 7, 1805, there is a description of a man from the Mandan tribe, who was sent with Lewis and Clark as a guide and translator.
I never learnt anything about the U.S. history before I came to a high school in Boston. The stories about Native Americans and exploration of west had always attracted me because nothing like that ever happened in the Chinese history. And this is the reason why I am going to do the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They were just so brave to explore a land that the Americans knew nothing about. Not only their spirit, the journals they kept and the maps they made were also precious gifts for the explorers after them.
Ocean. With this exploration came the realization that there was no easy all water route to the Pacific. That dream which had persisted for centuries had died. However, it would do little to stop the westward expansion. The American west was opened. This large migration
The movement of people that has resulted in the settlement of America is one of the most fascinating and significant topics in the history of the United States. Nowhere else has an area of equal size been settled as a result of the initiative of small groups and individuals. Westward expansion helped stimulate the American economy.
In the article, “into the unknown” the author states that Lewis and Clark knew it would be almost impossible to go across the continent without any help. On page 253, paragraph 40 it states “Therefore, Lewis and Clark sought meetings with tribes along the way. The explorers found many native people welcoming, but had difficulties with a few.” Also the author states that “The tribes the explorers encountered were sometimes fearful and suspicious” (253). This information shows that while some Native American could be trusted some other tribes could not.
Migration” took place. Over fifty thousand Europeans migrated to America moving westward, taking over the west coast and claiming the land that belonged to the Native Americans.
These nomads continued moving all the way to South America. By the time Europeans arrived in America, there were already at least forty to fifty million indigenous people inhabiting the land (Faber 4-5). Other explorers, from Norway, Greenland, and Iceland reached America centuries before Columbus (Faber ix). Although these people attempted to live in this new land, they didn’t stay long, and failed to create a lasting historical impact (Faber 20-26).
During the westward expansion the Indians were the only Texans who had any real knowledge of the land west of the present day Interstate Highway 35. Soon settlers began to push homesteads farther west into this uncharted region. The new explorers faced several dangers such as weather, water shortages, and uncertain relations with Indians. New explorations and developments in transportation and establishments brought more movement to the west. Residents began arriving in the west hoping to get rich land and political representation. The men and women who went out to establish the last frontier lived lives that would decisively shape the American character. The settlement of the frontier was driven by profit and political purpose. U.S. citizens pursued the work and adventure of subduing their country’s last frontier. Settling the frontier brought out the best and worst in people of all varieties that wanted to make their mark in the west.
