The King Arthur story takes on many perceptions and interpretations. These perceptions and interpretations can be very different. The show Merlin is an adaptation of the King Arthur story but Merlin is the main hero in the story not King Arthur. In the book, The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights, the main hero is King Arthur not Merlin. These two versions both incorporate King Arthur's last battle but are both very different. Merlin and The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights are different by Merlin tries to save King Arthur from dying but in the The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights Merlin is not even mentioned.
The death of Arthur is different in both texts because the show wants to appeal to a bigger audience. The main difference is that in The Legends of King Arthur, Arthur dies right after he gets stabbed from Modred, but in the show Merlin, he lives for a another couple of days while Merlin tries to find the place where Arthur will be saved. Merlin showed Arthur’s death the way it did because they wanted the audience to be on edge. In the show, Merlin is the main hero and reveals that he has magical powers to Arthur while Arthur is dying. In the book Merlin is never mentioned and never was this close to Arthur. The show focuses on Merlin being the main hero because they wanted to portray that a common day person can be a hero. Merlin has magical powers and the show is based off of these magical powers.
