This essay is a critical appraisal of a quantitative research article “The Personality of
Emergency nurses: Is it unique?” (Kennedy, Curtis & Waters, 2014). I will analyse the
study’s strengths and weaknesses and discuss how the article could be used in evidence based
practice by systematically following the quantitative research process (Ingham-Broomfield,
2008 and Solutions for Public Health, 2010). In medicine, critical appraisal enables evidence-
based practice. Evidence based practice involves best evidence obtainable to guide decision
making and patient care (Sackett, Rosenberg, Gray, Haynes & Richardson, 1996).
Competency in critical appraisal enables the reader to decide whether the information is
trustworthy, relevant to the research question and free of bias.
One will usually begin a critical appraisal by analysing the title. A good title should cover
three specific areas of a study; the topic, the setting and what methodologies were used
(Aromataris et al., 2015). I believe this particular article’s title is satisfactory. The topic is
‘personality’ and ‘emergency nurses’, the setting is the ‘emergency’ department however
without reading further into the abstract it is unknown if the setting is a public or private
hospital and it does not specify where in the world the study refers to. No methodology is
mentioned creating a weakness in the title. At this point I am unsure if the research is
qualitative or quantitative. The question mark
In reviewing this article, this writer was able critique the study and the suitability that it can possess if applied to actual practice. An important factor on whether a study can be considered valuable is if it is transferable in other situation, that is, a study's results should also be reflective if duplicated on other samples (Polit & Beck, 2006). Thus, the statistical power, internal and external validity are important to observe and note (Polit & Beck). If this writer were to carry out this study, it would have to be reflective of how the researcher performed it originality.
The following paragraph will now look into the opening aspects of the study along with the first research question aimed to address.
Researchers often times are faced with the decision of choosing a methodology of research; either Quantitative or Qualitative that they think best fits their study and objectives. This choice is guarded by the topic of study, the advantages and disadvantages, and the strengths and weaknesses of using either one or the other type of the methodologies.
Produce a methodology for the chosen area of research, the approach taken and a précis of findings.
In this assignment I will be comparing different research methodologies, which might be used in health and social care setting.

However, the pitfalls of the study are also included in this section as well as the factors that limited the study. This section should however, compare the results with those from other similar studies. Yet for this paper, that part was lacking. Besides, the paper discussed the potential limitations to the research as well as the strengths of the study (Viktrup, 2002). The study’s implication is also inclusive and is clearly structured and helpful. Finally, the paper had a conclusion that contained a summary and the recommendations.
The author’s development of explaining the theory and validity of the research had minimum thorough explanation. The results were provided through quantitative means instead of qualitative. This is not an issue; however, this could have been studied

Her report also claims that the credibility of the authors can inform the reader of the credibility of the paper as a whole, suggesting that the authors should not only be qualified in the research area, but should also have experience and knowledge of the practice area in question. The researchers of this paper have listed their workplace but have not included their job titles or qualifications; this makes assessing the competence of the researchers difficult. The abstract of this paper (titled ‘Summary’ within the text) is succinct and outlines the research aim, sample, methodology, results and conclusions. This ensures that the reader can quickly decide whether the study is of interest, according to Ryan, Coughlan & Cronin’s critique framework

This section provides an introduction to the different types of research paradigms and methods before concluding on the approach that this study will undertake.
The negative aspect of this literature study was that one does not have access to all type of articles. Some articles are available to access free and some of
