This essay is a critical appraisal of a quantitative research article “The Personality of

Emergency nurses: Is it unique?” (Kennedy, Curtis & Waters, 2014). I will analyse the

study’s strengths and weaknesses and discuss how the article could be used in evidence based

practice by systematically following the quantitative research process (Ingham-Broomfield,

2008 and Solutions for Public Health, 2010). In medicine, critical appraisal enables evidence-

based practice. Evidence based practice involves best evidence obtainable to guide decision

making and patient care (Sackett, Rosenberg, Gray, Haynes & Richardson, 1996).

Competency in critical appraisal enables the reader to decide whether the information is

trustworthy, relevant to the research question and free of bias.

One will usually begin a critical appraisal by analysing the title. A good title should cover

three specific areas of a study; the topic, the setting and what methodologies were used

(Aromataris et al., 2015). I believe this particular article’s title is satisfactory. The topic is

‘personality’ and ‘emergency nurses’, the setting is the ‘emergency’ department however

without reading further into the abstract it is unknown if the setting is a public or private

hospital and it does not specify where in the world the study refers to. No methodology is

mentioned creating a weakness in the title. At this point I am unsure if the research is
