A cross-cultural perspective can enrich our understanding of classic and current research in the most important topics in the science of social behavior, including social cognition, social influence, and social relations The basic concept of any life form is diversity. Human beings are no exception to this general principle. Diversity to me is the ability for differences to coexist together, with some type of mutual understanding or acceptance present. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing their individual differences. A person’s or groups individual difference can vary from the magnitudes dealing with race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Acceptance of different viewpoints is the key to overcoming many prejudices towards diverse groups of people. America’s struggles with race and racism are never completely out of it. The diversity group I will be using is the African American populations. They have received ill legitimate treatment from the time they were discovered. From slavery, prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes, if you can name it this race has experience it but the big question is why and how did these negative biases develop. There are a lot of myths out there about black people but, which ones are actually
Accepting the differences of others by expanding your own level of understanding begins with the awareness that your own culture
African Americans have faced constant challenges since the end of the Civil War and slavery. Racism has always been used heavily against them, but they have never let the ignorance hold them down. While enduring many struggles, they have found a variety of ways to advance. Black Americans have achieved much legal, social, and cultural advancement in history. Today, blacks have reached the greatest heights; including presidential status, but still, unfortunately, face racism every single day.
African American has been facing racial inequalities for hundred of centuries now. Blacks were viewed as being less than human for a very long time, as they fought though the harsh years of slavery which began on American soil back in 1619 when the first African American slaves were brought to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia. These people were being starved, they little to no clothing, no shoes, they were ripped from their family, they were beating, many were killing and the women were often raped. Their children were working at very young ages they were all (men and women) uneducated and basically were under all circumstances they were to be kept that way.
America’s foundation in a sense was founded on racism. Although we live in a much more different, accepting time, it wasn’t too long ago that there was segregation and extreme racism in our society. We as a society have now since evolved and are now more tolerable and diverse then what we once were. However, there still are cases in America that show just how far we still need to develop our tolerance.
Right now most of America is focused on racism towards African-Americans and hardly ever focused on different groups that are facing racism. The American Natives have be constantly
Looking back over the years of the United States history, one of our worst problems was the bad treatment of minorities. In the beginning there was selling of slaves which really split the nation. There were many people in the United States that tried to elevate the legal status of African Americans. One was passing the Civil Rights Act or Movement, in 1968 the signing of the Fair Housing Act and the recent re-enactment of the Affirmative Action law that African Americans would be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as Caucasian Americans. This is still not the case.
Race is a topic that has been a part of American history since the beginning of the colonized America. This country has always struggled with the idea of people with different ethnicities and what that means for the society in which both live in. These differences have caused a lot of animosity in the country and changes had to be made. The country has changed and adapted to overcome obstacles once ethic discoveries were made. However, the road has been long and hard for many individuals who have faced decimation and persecution. Many key events have taken place in history since 1877 for the African Americans to have the rights they do today but three stand out and those are Plessy v. Ferguson, the Civil Right Act, and the New Jim Crow laws
America had some of the most well known acts of racial discrimination in history including slavery, the Jim Crow laws and many others. Black people or ‘coloured people’ as they used to call them also had some of the most influential protests and speeches against segregation although many were harmed in the process
Racism in this country has been prevalent over centuries now, and still a huge hindrance in the United States of America. Racism has a huge history with scholars documenting the long illustrious reasons and root causes as to why this has become such a major topic of issue in the United States and its psychological and social obliterations in the society.
Most African-Americans living in the United States today have ties to slavery, meaning that they are the descendants of slaves. Following that back even further, a huge majority of the entire immigration of Black people to the Americas was through the transatlantic slave trade. Throughout our country’s history, Black people have faced discrimination and prejudice, which they have fought to overcome. The greatest advancement towards overcoming this discrimination was the abolishment of slavery during The Civil Way. However, being freed did not mean that they were able to live as freely as other Americans. The battle for other rights and an end to segregation lasted another century. Even today, discrimination against Black people is all too prolific.
Individual, societal, and cultural factors play an important role with how we perceive, communicate, and build relationships with others. These factors also influence the language we speak, the food we eat, and even the social class that we belong to. With this in mind, we must come to realize that perception varies from person to person, instead of showing prejudice towards others for not sharing common beliefs or moral values.
Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior. There are many different branches and fields of psychology. The field of psychology that will be discussed within this paper is called cross-cultural psychology. Cultural psychology will also be discussed. To begin these types of psychology will be defined and the so the differences and similarities between the two will also be discussed. In order to fully grasp an understanding of cultural and cross-cultural psychology, the role of critical thinking within this scientific study as well as the methodology used in this field of psychology will also
Throughout history there has been so many terrible events that happened because of racism. For instance one is the acts of slavery that occurred. This is especially known in history with the African-Americans. They were seen as objects for work and not actual human beings. Many died of disease or
According to Smith (2004), understanding that we are not the same is significant in bridging cultural barriers and avoiding too many cultural shocks. For example, in Saudi Arabia, a person tries their best to pay the bill in a café or restaurant on behalf of others in a social group. The first day I came to America, I went out with some of my neighbors to a nearby bakery. Each one ordered what they like. When the waiter came with the bill, I snatched it to pay. My group did not fight back to pay the bill and just said, "Thank you!" I was not amazed at all; and it was a very normal thing I did. However, the cultural shock appeared again. After one week, we hanged out again in a different café; and the same scenario
James Baldwin a famed writer during the Harlem Renaissance said it best in my dungeon shook. “You were born where you were and faced the future that you faced because you were black and for no other reason”. (Baldwin) This quote is significant and multi-racial to all minority groups in the united states. From the moment, a person of different color stepped onto this land the xenophobia was placed them for being different. They were destined to face challenges because they are not Caucasian Americans that white people believe molded this country. And, from the years of discrimination minorities face they will always be more of an impoverished people. This is evident in various areas but specifically, when you look at the housing market, the health care, and standard of school show the disparity between white Americans and minority groups.
