1. What behaviours by Alex are having the greatest impact on the 360° data provided by her co-workers? Which of these behaviours are positive and which are negative?

This case study provides valuable insight into the way emotions and soft skills or its absence can affect motivation and leadership capabilities.

Alex Sander is the newest and youngest product manager at Landon. He had been very successful in the 2 product releases he has been in charge of, nevertheless, he seems to be lacking the ability to lead and direct his team to complete the work assigned to them.

As mentioned in the previous question, in order to move up from product manager, Alex needs to develop his soft skills. Nevertheless, he does not seem to recognize that he lacks that ability.

Another issue hindering Alex’s leadership potential is that he does not listen to feedback. For Alex to advance to higher positions in the future, he needs to take feedback and incorporate it into his leadership style. In fact, if he cannot adapt to the needs and profiles of different people, especially his team members, then he will never be an effective leader.

So far, Alex has relied on his ability and capacity to complete and control all of the aspects of his product campaigns; however, as his supervisor pointed out, Alex will not be able to do everything by himself for all of his products. Eventually, he will be forced to rely on the work and help of his co-workers and team members.

There are several alternatives to solve the issue of Alex’s inability to lead and direct his team. The most extreme would be for Landon to take away Alex’s leadership position and use his talent as a regular member of a product team. Regarding this solution, Sam Glass hired Alex for his ability to shake things up and get things done. Therefore, this solution is not the best option, as he may become unhappy and leave to work for one of Alex’s present peers/competitors.
